Flyers Will Sign Vincent Lecavalier to a Five-Year, $22.5 Million Deal

Screen Shot 2013-07-02 at 7.40.18 PMI can’t tell if I love this or hate this. The Flyers will sign Vinny Lecavalier, whose contract the Lightning just bought out, to a five-year, $22.5 million deal, which will break down as follows:

Screen Shot 2013-07-02 at 7.31.46 PM

The team confirmed the signing.

That’s a lot of years and money for a 33-year-old who hasn’t scored over 54 points in three seasons, during all of which he’s missed time. His $4.5 million cap hit will be the Flyers’ second-highest among forwards. This means that to field a reasonable team next year, they will need to shed salary somewhere, so they can sign a goalie and a few capable defensemen.

There was some conjecture on Twitter and amongst a few Flyers people today that Lecavalier was a looming possibility. Now it’s done. Lecavalier is a name, yes… but does anyone else feel like he’s not exactly what the Flyers need right now?

  1. The salary shed will come when they finally get rid of those stiffs named Coburn and Gervais.

That’s right. Because the rest of the leagues GMs will trip over themselves to take on those two stiffs.

Jesus. Not sure who is stupider: you or Homer. You must be from Delco.

      • Edmonton had an offer on the table for Coburn. Gervais will be waived and not count against the cap because he makes less than 900k.

Yup. And a mere 24 minutes later you rush to your keyboard to defend your loser franchise.

Where in that comment do you see me defending “my” franchise? You yinzers don’t read too well. I’m a Philadelphian on a Philly sports blog. You’re probably an inbred yinzer with nothing better to do than follow the Flyers, trying to get your mind off of that brutal, violent, four game raping handed down by Boston.

Homer has to realize, you don’t tug on Eddie Snider’s dick, you don’t spit against the wind, and you don’t write checks that your body can’t cash!

This is wonderful. More old flotsam to gum up your cap situation. It’s almost like Homer doesn’t learn or something!

Keep it coming, Kensos! The world continues to laugh at you.

  3. Lecavalier > Briere. He is also 2 million dollars cheaper and makes less than hartnell. He has also scored 20+ goals 12 of the past 13 years including last years (including the past lockout shortened year). Obviously they are getting rid of either mez or coburn or both and Pronger still needs to go on LTIR.

Don’t make me bust out Jeff Carter’s goal numbers. Just saying.

      • Since I came into the league in 2004-2005, Vinny has 9 more goals than me :(

      • I don’t see your point. Not every signing the flyers make can be tied back to trading away carter. If that was the case I could just say, Don’t make me bring up peter forsberg’s numbers because we traded him for Lindros, every time we sign a player.

      • Jesus christ dude…I always defend you against people when it comes to the Richards/Carter stuff, but come on. Jeff Carter is completely irrelevant to this. Whoops point is spot on.

      • Lafferty, Daniel

        July 2, 2013 at 9:58 pm

You love to bring up Carter’s goal numbers, but refuse to note that Voráček has 28 (twenty-eight!) more points than him since the trade.

        “But Carter won a Cup!”

Yeah, with a team the Flyers didn’t trade him to… Just saying…

        • Daniel 1 Kyle 0

I said the same thing a while ago that he beats a dead horse. I think he just wants to bang Carter.

      • kyle looks like someone hacked your account b/c i know you wouldn’t go back to the jeff carter well…..again! the guy is slightly better than average(go ahead bring up his goals and i raise you with his lack of assists and the fact that he is no longer good in his own end). yeah he had a lot of goal last year but he shot 19.5%, very uncarterlike. id be willing to bet $1000 he doesn’t duplicate that next year, you have my email–lets figure out the perimeters if you are interested.

Typical flyers move signing another pussy in his 30s in the twilight of his career. I’m sure Lisa Hillary is wet as shit thinking of her future interview with Lecavalier.

  6. Candy from the Oak

    July 2, 2013 at 7:57 pm

Only imagine all the out of work Delco trash taking their flyers jerseys to get relettered tomorrow

  7. On the surface I like this deal.
The Flyers desperately need leadership, something that their best player, Giroux, is not suited for, and now along with Streit they have two players who have been captains in the league.
Thirty-three is by no means old, however, I believe Lecavalier has been in the league since he was eighteen so he has a lot of miles on him.

  8. I think this is a good signing. The guy can still score and will help mold young players like cooter who needs to get out of his sophomore slump. He is 2.5 million cheaper than briere and can light the lamp enough for us to stay in games. We can make a few trades, like coburn, to free up some cap space to sign a D man and a goalie. Overall a good signing that will give the flyers some more goals to help make up for their lack of defense to this point.

  9. I can’t tell which GM is worse: Homer or Amaro

  12. Can’t win with Philly fans. First it’s “why are we still trying to recreate the broad street bullies,” now that we picked up a highly skilled vet it’s “what a big old pussy!” The Flyers are trying to win the cup every year, and they’re never too far off. How about for a change you shitty fans stop acting like you could build a better team and just give this team a shot. They have 7-8 guys who can score 20-30 goals, a good mix of youth and vets, a former rookie of the year goalie with a chip on his shoulder, and by the end of free agency, they’ll have a D with 4 big dudes who hit hard and block shots, and 2 older offensive dmen who are still serviceable. This will be a very good team.

    July 2, 2013 at 8:36 pm

This is a ticket-selling move, not a cup-winning move. Plain and simple. Made simply to excite the fan base and prevent a drop-off in ticket sales. I still need someone to convince me that the motive down there is not to simply pack the house and keep the team competitive year over year. If they were serious about winning a Cup, is this really the move you make? Does Chicago or Boston make this move?? Does this strike fear into the hearts of the Penguins? I mean, you elect to make drastic salary-cutting decisions (Briere and Bryzgalov) just to gain cap flexibility, then IMMEDIATELY go and piss it away by handcuffing yourself again with moves such as this and Streit? Please tell me there are two amnesty buyouts in 2016 because I know who I’m betting on. Best part is, Holmgren inevitably now has to start giving away d-men for fifty cents on the dollar just to get under the cap. This blows. Lecavalier is old and soft. I’d rather sign Thomas, trade for Bobby Ryan, and sign David Clarkson (or Gagne). If it costs me Coburn, Laughton and/or McGinn plus picks, fine. Just keep the young centers and get nasty on the wings. And save just enough cap space for a defenseman move at the trade deadline.

    • Lafferty, Daniel

      July 2, 2013 at 9:52 pm

      These deals hardly handcuff them.

    • Larry Andersen

      July 2, 2013 at 11:01 pm

Exactly right. You hit it on the head. The Flyers pretty much sell out every game – all they have to do is sign some washed up big names so that you renew your season tickets and business is good.

    • Boston was interested in Lecavalier, as were about nine other teams who met with him before he signed.

  16. I’m confused why you think Defense is still a need. Listen to who Flyers have next year on D already:

    - Kimmo Timonen
    - Mark Streit
    - Luke Schenn
    - Braydon Coburn
    - Nick Grossman
    - Andrej Mezaros

There’s 6. All high priced. Not to mention drafting back to back defenseman, Gervais/Lauridsen/Gus/Manning/ Bourdon are All capable as being fill ins and all serviceable 5th and 6th defenders.

The DEFENSE was hurt last year. And if we would add more defense someone HAS TO GO because there is no minutes left.

    Educate yourselves before you rant.

Vinny at 4.5 mil a season is fantastic. And now you fill the void Jagr left and Briere couldn’t fill. A vet to help all the youth we got (Voracek, Schenn, Simmer, couts, read)

    • Lafferty, Daniel

      July 2, 2013 at 9:51 pm

I’d like to see Coburn gone (he turns the puck over way too much), but I agree with you. The defense played pretty well at the end of last season when young, healthy guys were stepping in and playing every game.

You know what you’re getting with Timonen and Streit. Grossmann has been solid since joining the Flyers. Schenn, while he got caught sometimes, was a wrecking ball and is only getting better. Meszároš is made of glass, but is good when he’s healthy.

Lauridsen and Gustafsson can definitely play when needed. Gustafsson actually got a lot of time on the power play towards the end of last season.

I like getting Lecavalier. He’s an experienced leader and can put up 20 goals and 60 points if he’s playing with Giroux and Voráček.

    • Larry Andersen

      July 2, 2013 at 11:02 pm

      - Kimmo Timonen & – Mark Streit (both will be senior citizens in the near future)
      - Luke Schenn (Matt Carle giveaway machine but he makes great ESPN highlight reel hits – wow)
      - Braydon Coburn (serviceable)
      - Nick Grossman (average)
      - Andrej Mezaros (is hurt ALL THE FUCKING TIME)

    • Smooth Eddie Snides

      July 3, 2013 at 2:04 pm

. He is one of the biggest plugs in the league, that’s why people want to dump him… He constantly turns the puck over in his own zone, I cringe whenever he’s in a scrum or has to make a quick choice due to presse behind the net, he’s 6’5” and never uses his size to clear out the slot or the front of the crease. Last year I almost fell off my chair when I heard that he logs the most minutes on the team, and magically after he gets hurt, they start playing better hockey…

Mesz has been disappointing the last few years, he doesn’t offer much defensively, and he get hurt too often to contribute much on the power play… I’d get rid of both of them, but then who do they find to replace them?

  18. Show us carters numbers in the playoffs for us kyle you pussy, and last i checked voracek is already a better player then carter so stop bringing him up. Show us the video of him backdoor empty net game 6 against niemi that cost us the stanley cup, or game 2 against fleury the year before that basically ended the series against the pens. God damnit you and your love for carter are pissing me off and believe me i love the blog but its making it hard to read

  23. It makes no sense to take minutes away from schenn and coots, guys you’re trying to develop….sad. We throw away a 3rd round pick on a goon and trade for a goon the next day. Get in the box Eddie, so we can straighten out this franchise.

  24. Why would anyone wanna trade Coburn over Mez for any reason other than you can get a better return for him. Coburn costs just 500k more, and is capable of logging big minutes against 1st line opponents. Mez however has always benefits from favorable matchups and being placed in offensive situations, while not handling as many minutes. Annnnd he can’t even get on the fucking ice.

Everyone wants to see more money invested into the defense when they have the HIGHEST PAID DEFENSE CORPS IN THE LEAGUE. Getting value from them is another issue but if you trade Coburn and wait til Mez is gonna after this year you have a ton of flexibility next year, but youll have to find talent to sign.
    You guys are fucking idiots

I don’t suppose it’s in Paul Holmgren’s DNA to sign a free agent or trade for someone who’s YOUNGER than 30. First, it was 35 year old Mark Streit, now 33 year Vincent Lecavalier, and let’s not forget the semi-persistent rumor of the Flyers showing interest in 39 year old Tim Thomas as our next goalie du jour. Is Homer attempting to recreate the 1983 Phillies, a.k.a. “The Wheeze Kids”? Before you know it, Lou Nolan will be announcing the AARP Power Play down at the Wells Fargo Center. All in all, I’m not too terribly fond of what’s going on here.

  26. This isnt bad at all. Hes a younger, bigger, and better version of Briere at a price tag 2 million dollars cheaper. Hes missed time, but has he missed as much/produced as little as briere? Also, between him and streit, they more than make up for the veteran presence lost when jagr walked and briere got bought out. Also, it makes losing gagne not be as bignof a deal. But, if resigning gagne is a concern, id imagine rejoining his old TB teammate gives him even more incentive to try and stay, as hes already said he wants to stay amd doesnt care for how much.

He doesnt put us over the cap that much, as we can clear Coburn/Mez and one or two other guys (Hopefully not named Couturier or Schenn) and get enough room to sign Tim Thomas/other cheap goalie, and maybe another defenseman. Plus, Prongers hit comes off the books on day 1 when he goes on LTIR.

This wasnt a ridiculous signing, as what we paid for him is a bargain for his services. Hes 33, and can probably give us at least 3 good years out of the 5.

The Flyers are a shiny-object owner with a shiny-object fanbase, judging from Philly blog comments and ticket sales.

So really, who loses? Except those who are tired of the offseason championship act and know the team isn’t addressing its real needs…again.

How old is Ed Snider again?

  28. Love this move. Vinny Fucking Cavs
