It’s not summer until a Phillie threatens to kick Howard Eskin’s ass.

According to these two Tweets from some dude we don’t know, Jonathan Papelbon confronted Eskin in the dugout today, presumably in response to Eskin’s (very tenuous) report that the reason Papelbon couldn’t pitch in a loss to the Mets in New York two weeks ago was because he was out late the night before. In a Twitter exchange with Eskin, Papelbon’s wife, Ashley, denied that was the case. Eskin responded in his typical jackasstic fashion. Obviously, Papelbon took exception to all of this, and he approached Eskin today.

Eskin responded to these tweets, saying “#Papswaswrong.” And he told our podcast buddy Kevin Matuszak that it was Papelbon who instigated (because of course that’s his viewpoint):

Delightful.

There are no further details, and there don’t appear to be any other accounts of the incident.

I’m all for calling guys out if they’re out late and then can’t perform the next day, and I’m certainly all for ripping Papelbon, but there’s no evidence that what Eskin reported was true. At the very least, you have to like Paps showing some fight… unlike the rest of the team.
