Ed Werder, apparently taking a break from the Cowboys beat, reports that the Eagles and Sam Bradford are discussing a short-term extension:

The Philadelphia Eagles have interest in tying starting quarterback Sam Bradford to the franchise beyond the upcoming season, and have begun discussing a contract extension, according to sources.

It is not expected the negotiations would result in a long-term contract but more likely an agreement providing the team control of Bradford past the 2015 season, the final year of his current contract.

This is a bet hedge on both sides. If Bradford plays great, the Eagles lock him up (yes, I never thought I’d write the Eagles lock Sam Bradford up) for another season or two without breaking the bank. For Bradford, he’s guaranteed a little more money should his knee(s) implode and render him utterly useless as a football player.

But, I just hate the idea that my hometown – your hometown – Eagles are pursuing an even short-term extension with Bradford. Something just feels off about this. They’ve parted ways with some legitimate talent (perhaps for legitimate reasons), but want to make sure Bradford doesn’t grow too big to grasp? You know, I am 100% in Chip’s camp, but there seems to be a bit of Ruben Amaro’s Hey-I-Know-That-Guy philosophy at work here. The same way Rube seems to accumulate 2007 All-Stars is the same way Chip seemingly favors 2009-ish college stars and former Oregon players. That sort of thing is a bad fantasy strategy, and it’s an even worse real-world strategy. Nothing about this excites me.
