The beer bottle-throwing incident may be the most egregious in Philly fandom lore. Way above Pukemon (freak thing), throwing batteries at J.D. Drew (deserved?), snowballs at Santa (nothing), throwing light-up bracelets on the ice (harmless). Ryan Howard, for all of his faults as a hitter – and there are many – is among the most accomplished local athletes of a generation. There seems to be a general malaise that has taken over his approach to the game since his big contract kicked in as he tore his Achillies in Game 5 against the Cardinals in the 2011 NLDS, and he ranks among the most frustrating “great” players to watch, but he’s also been the cleanup hitter on a truly great team, he’s been a decent citizen, and he’s actually handled his pseudo-demotion this season fairly well. Throwing a bottle at the guy runs counter to being a frustrated Philly fan. Here, we boo, vociforously, to show our displeasure. It’s understood. But Howard has also been here long enough to know that those boos will turn to cheers when he returns for the 10th anniversary of the 2008 World Series in two years. What happened this weekend was pathetic and sad.

A quick note about the lack of updates: In case you haven’t noticed, Jim has essentially been running the site for a few weeks. I moved over the weekend, and the lead up to it, in a small house packed with boxes, an infant, and other commotion, made working from home nearly impossible. Not to mention all the chaos that goes with moving. So, we’ll be back to regularly-scheduled programming shortly, now that I have an actual, human person office, reasonably far from said commotion, in which to work.

Let’s hit it!

The roundup:

It’s no surprise that they type of asshole to toss a bottle at a home player would be drinking this abomination of me-too marketing.

Carli Lloyd, ever the stateswoman, coming out with flames at what I can only assume is TSA:

This is everyone. The thing with throwback uniforms is that, no matter how ugly they are, you can always praise they’re beauty in irony. If they were beautiful to begin with… well, then, doubly good.

Philly’s water may not have a ton of lead, but they aren’t doing the right kind of tests to find out.

The Phils have narrowed their top draft pick candidates to a “small handful.”

On the sites that deal with the kind of constant, baseless trade rumor mongering, the Sixers will likely trade with Phoenix (giving up Okafor), the Lakers, Chicago, and Phoenix again(giving up Ben Simmons’ rights for some idiotic reason).

Pro Football Focus hates Chase Daniel’s contract.
