Pro Football Focus – the website that will forever take a slight credibility hit because it didn’t think the Eagles’ offensive line sucked last year – ranks Carson Wentz as the best quarterback and rookie in the NFL so far this season.

Quarterback:

1. Carson Wentz is PFF’s highest-graded QB through two weeks.

You read that correctly. Through Week 2, second-overall pick Carson Wentz—who only a few short weeks ago was set to back up Sam Bradford in Philadelphia—owns a 90.8 overall grade this season. That puts him ahead of Andrew Luck (87.9), Eli Manning (87.3), and yes, Bradford (87.2). While many predicted that the rookie out of North Dakota State would take a step back after his impressive debut versus the Browns (PFF analysts included), Wentz threw for 190 yards, a touchdown, and no picks against the Bears—he’s yet to throw a pick this year—on his way to an 87.0 game grade. Wentz’s yardage total should have been considerably higher, as his receivers dropped two deep passes that, if completed, would have totaled another 76 yards.

And at least one touchdown.

Rookie:

1. Carson Wentz, QB, Eagles

We’re not going to crown Carson Wentz just yet—a lot of quarterbacks are going to looks like All-Pros against the Browns and Bears this year—but if Rookie of the Year voting were to end today, it wouldn’t be particularly close. Wentz isn’t just the highest-graded rookie, he’s the highest graded quarterback in the entire league. His stats aren’t overwhelming (they’d look better if he didn’t have the second-most yards lost through the air due to drops, with 89), but he’s doing so many things well that it seems incredible there were so many skeptics during draft season—myself included.

So drops like this don’t happen to everyone.

You notice a theme here? Wentz has been great and he’d be even better if his receivers weren’t terrible. The fact that Jordan Matthews and Nelson Agholor are doing their damned best to throttle Wentz makes you wonder if Sam Bradford – plagued by drops last year – and even Chip Kelly are as bad as we perceived them to be. Either way, there’s no denying that Carson Wentz has been excellent.
