You hear that, Odubel Herrera?

The Phillies announced the hiring and promotion of a large number of staff today, including placing the beautifully named Gregg Legg as the manager of Double-A Reading. But perhaps the most notable move is the hiring of the team’s first ever Mental Skills coach.

According to Philly.com, Geoff Miller was named the Phillies’ first-ever mental skills coach. Miller authored Intangibles: Big-League Stories and Strategies for Winning the Mental Game—in Baseball and in Life in 2012, and “previously worked in a similar capacity for the Pirates, Nationals and Braves.”

He’s a partner at Winning Mind, a “Management Consultancy focused on Organizational Development and Performance Coaching,” looking at the mental side of the game. In his bio on Winning Mind, it says Miller’s “organizational involvement has included Major League players and staff, Player Development at every minor league level, and psychological evaluations of potential draft picks in Scouting.” I’m sure bringing him on will help with Odubel Herrera mental errors.

Additionally, the Phils hired Bryan Minniti – reportedly a candidate for the formerly open GM job for the Diamondbacks – as a special assistant to Matt Klentak. They also promoted Jorge Velandia, “credited for persuading the Phillies before the Rule 5 draft that Odubel Herrera could play the outfield,” to the same role. Way down the line, the Phils hired former Phillie Charlie Hayes as a coach with the Gulf Coast League.
