No, don’t do this.

Baltimore Sun reporter Jeff Zrebiac brought up the possibility of the Ravens, who need a receiver, trading for Jordan Matthews. This comes on the heels of Jimmy Kempski continually beating the trade Matthews drum. Zrebiac:

The Eagles clearly prioritized getting impressive young quarterback Carson Wentz help this offseason. They added Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith in free agency. They drafted Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson in the fourth and fifth rounds, respectively. They also still have Jordan Matthews, Nelson Agholor and Dorial Green-Beckham on their roster. It’s almost inconceivable they’ll be able to carry all seven on their regular-season roster. Agholor and Green-Beckham, former first- and second-round picks, have been significant disappointments. However, Matthews would seemingly be a nice fit for the Ravens, and he probably wouldn’t cost a ton in return.

I would hate this. One of the things the Eagles have going for them most heading into next season – ironically enough – is their wide receiver depth. Alshon Jeffery is a clear number one. Torrey Smith, if he gets his shit together, makes for a solid outside deep threat. And that puts Jordan Matthews into his more natural slot position. That is a really good and balanced receiving corps. It’s easy to rag on Matthews, but he’s been playing above his pay grade the last few seasons as not only the Eagles’ top receiver but also perhaps their only capable one. Regardless of where he lined up, he was the top target, drew extra coverage and was generally forced into positions he shouldn’t have been in. But shift the focus to Jeffery on the outside and have Smith keep a safety honest on the other side… well, you open up a lot of space for Matthews.

Last year, Doug Pederson called Matthews “the perfect slot receiver,” so I’d think he and the Eagles are well aware of how good the receiving corps could be and would like to give Matthews a chance to work in a deeper group. Sure, Matthews might not make long-term sense since he’ll be a free agent after the season, but I’d be hesitant to move him not until you see how he performs with a bonafide stud lining up alongside him.
