Tough day. I’m willing to bet that for many if not most of our readers Darren Daulton was the first Philly athlete they loved. Everyone has a positive Dutch story. This was arguably his biggest hit as a Phillie:

Let’s hit it!

The roundup:

There will be much more on Dutch later.

The Eagles could trade Jordan Matthews. From Tim McManus:

Matthews is a difficult player to put a price tag on to begin with. His agents could make the case that there’s no reason to dip below Kenny Stills(four years, $32 million) and that he’s worthy of Tavon Austin money (four years, $42 million). The counter would be that Matthews is a slot receiver — not an exceptionally explosive one relative to some others out there — and paying big money for a player who might end up being the team’s third receiving option doesn’t make sense.

To me, trading Matthews due at least in part to Nelson Agholor’s excellent training camp would be a huge mistake. The Eagles turned a weakness into a strength by adding Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith over the offseason. Their additions, combined with the apparent improvement in Agholor, will give Matthews the opportunity to play his more natural slot role, where he should excel. Trading him because he’s in the last year of a contract and relying on the other three guys would be foolish. I was most excited about Matthews being a dominant slot receiver. Maybe this is all posturing, but I am FIRMLY in the don’t trade Matthews camp.

More: Jordan Matthews fires back at comments from Daniel Jeremiah, who recently spent time at Eagles camp and seems to have the inside scoop on where they are leaning at slot receiver:

Jordan Matthews didn’t put much stock in comments recently made by an NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah that implied Nelson Agholor would be the Eagles’ starting slot wide receiver ahead of him.

“My biggest thing is, am I getting reps now? Am I getting opportunities to go out there and make plays? That’s my only focus,” Matthews said Sunday after open practice at Lincoln Financial Field. “I can’t really worry too much about what Daniel Jeremiah says, or any of those guys. They don’t play ball. They’re not in the front office.”

Jeremiah used to be an Eagles scout, though, and he recently spent a day at training camp. He previously worked under executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman and worked alongside vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas with the Ravens.

“He’s going to be their slot receiver,” Jeremiah said on his podcast. “I’ll be shocked if he’s not. I don’t know what that means for Jordan Matthews.”

Here’s a thought: The Eagles either leaked this to Jeremiah and are eager to run Matthews out of town… or, they used Jeremiah to light a fire under Matthews as it seems there’s some thought that he’s been milking his knee injury, one which he sustained because Doug Pederson insisted on tackling in training camp last year, because he’s coming up on a contract year and doesn’t want to further aggravate it in the preseason. Either way, it seems like an avoidable situation.
