Staying true to their threat promise that there would be three different “Stars and Stripes” hats this year, the second iteration of the program was unveiled by New Era and the MLB today. I would expect a unique jersey will be paired with it, and purely guessing, I expect they will fill the Phillies lettering with the blue field of stars from the inside of the “P.”

Across the league, it’s the same design with either a blue or red brim and a white or grey crown depending on whether they’re home or away. They look like the “ice cream man” hats from the 2010 Stars and Stripes program.

They’re ugly, but I have to give them credit for being uniquely ugly compared to the Memorial Day camouflage hats. On the bright side, at least red is one of the Phillies colors, so it’s not like the A’s who will be mixing red with their green and yellow color scheme.

For some trivia, the White Sox used a blue fill with stars pattern in their logo in 1917 for the World Series, so this is not the first time it’s been done. (and look at the flag patches…maybe related to World War I?) A closer look at the pattern here from the Hall of Fame .

See all the teams’ hats at New Era’s Facebook page.

UPDATE: It looks like the camo mix-up was just an error on the MLB Shop website. The uniforms worn on Monday both used the Desert pattern.

from Monday’s game against the Red Sox

Adding to Kyle’s post yesterday, the Phillies will not only be wearing camouflage hats on Memorial Day, they’ll have special jerseys on as well. Yikes. Setting aside the argument that it’s “Memorial Day,” not “Military Appreciation Day,” these are ugly, and it looks like the hats have a different camouflage pattern than the jerseys, so they don’t even match. Based on some quick Wikipedia “research,” it looks like the hats have the “MARPAT desert pattern” while the jerseys have the “MARPAT woodland pattern.” I’m at the mercy of Wikipedia (and a relatively low resolution picture of the jersey’s lettering) here, so if there are any experts out there, let me know if this is wrong.

Interestingly, Uni-Watch got a quote from a publicist saying that the Memorial Day hats are part of a “program” and “first in a series of three,” so look for additional designs on July 4 and September 11. Maybe they crisscrossed their camouflage patterns for the Memorial Day game (or just on the MLB Shop website)?

h/t to Uni-Watch for pointing out the ad copy showing camouflage jerseys as being “worn on-field.”

Head1So… three of the last six articles have been uniform-related. That pretty much sums up the amount of news generated by Philadelphia sports teams in this black hole of a news week.

This is the last UniDiction of a painful season. It's a week 4 rematch (back when the Eagles were in "seem OK, but aren't quite firing on all cylinders yet" mode), but with different uniforms (and a different predicted winner due to the Eagles in their awful white over green combination).

If you missed it, the Phillies 2013 batting practice hat leaked this week.

2013_mainPaul Lukas of uni-watch.com and ESPN got a major (minor?) scoop with leaked images of all of the new MLB batting practice hats for 2013. Details below, but by-and-large, it's very similar to the interleague 2003-07 alternate hat with the blue star removed and sticking with the blue "P" which has been an odd hallmark of the BP hats since the early 2000s. The comparatively light red "body" of the hat with the blue brim is visually out of balance (just like those old alternates), but it's much better than the overly decorated BP hats from recent years. The colors are a little off in the rendering, but there's no reason to think they'll be anything other than the standard Phillies red, white, and blue. I don't love it (solid blue, please), but it's an improvement. Oddly, MLB didn't get these out in time for holiday shopping (but the complete leak was available two days after Christmas… hmm), and being that these are replaced with a pretty predictable cadence to get new "on field" merchandise into fans' hands, even for teams with relatively static identities like the Phillies, it seems someone dropped the ball.

… And one more to go after this week. This one's a rematch, though unlike the second Cowboys game, we'll see different uniform combinations in what will more-than-likely be Andy Reid's final game coaching from the "home" sideline at Lincoln Financial Field. With a three-way tie in the NFC East and a healthy (enough?) Robert Griffin, this may be a good game for fans of the NFL, but not so great for Eagles fans. It's not like an Eagles win hurts the Cowboys or Giants playoff hopes at all (and, let's face it, Redskins hatred isn't quite the same), and an Eagles loss pushes them in the right direction in the draft order. (note: I didn't put much research into either of those statements, but they seem accurate…)

Week 15 saw the Seahawks debut their grey alternate over grey pants. It was a darker shade of grey than it looked in press pictures, so maybe it won't end up looking like the white jersey for all intents and purposes. It's on the far-right, below. It would be nice if they used the neon green a little more liberally, especially if it showed up on the pants stripe. I still think an 80s/90s throwback will take the alternate slot in a few years. For trivia's sake, let me point out that the Bills wore blue jerseys, so the game had no team in white, a very rare occurrence in the NFL. Yeah, it's grey, so it's barely not white, and each time it's worn, expect to see the other team in the color jersey, similar to when the Patriots had a silver alternate from 2003-07.

Three more games to go this year…

The Eagles showed up in their best white jersey look (with white pants) last week; this was the second time this combo has shown up in the regular season this year. Usually it's  pre-season only (or sparingly in the regular season). As far as I'm concerned, that's why they won. Two other uniform events in Week 14: the Bengals wore their orange alternates against the Cowboys (more on those alternates below), and the Bills wore their "standing Buffalo" throwbacks. When the Bills wore spacesuits from 2002-10, those throwbacks made sense. Their current uniform is already a "kind of" throwback (maybe even a "fauxback" in language of the uniform-centric corner of the internet) which throws back to the era of the standing buffalo logo. It's certainly a nice uniform, but it doesn't need to exist anymore. (throwback, left).

Look for the Seahawks to wear their alternate grey jersey in a monochrome combination on Sunday which Nike is calling "Wolf Grey." I've said it at length before, but grey has only a minimal place on sports uniforms that aren't "away" baseball sets. That's a straight-up Nike ad. Also, look for the grey uniforms to look more-or-less just like the white uniforms. As an example, the second picture below shows grey pants, the fifth shows white pants. Look for this alternate uniform to be replaced with an 80s/90s throwback in the next 5 years.

The Bengals get a lot of flack for their tacky uniform, though I think it's not that bad (they've had tiger stripes since the early 80s, and I'm a sucker for the white/black/orange [Flyers] color combination). Your Eagles/Bengals UniDiction is after the jump.

Ugh. The Eagles. At least they're playing against the Buccaneers, owners of the best modern uniform in the NFL. Also, look for the Eagles in their all-white combination, the best of their looks in their current uniform set.

BildeWeek 13 had two notable uniform stories. The Seahawks debuted their white over white uniform. They had previously paired their white jersey with their blue pants and grey pants. Another good look in a uniform set which has grown on me since it's debut, even though the grey pants look almost identical to the white pants (2nd image = grey pants, 5th = white pants), as I predicted in April when grey uniform elements were first shown. Also, the Rams wore their always-welcome "greatest show on turf"-era throwbacks.

The Eagles last met the Cowboys only a few short weeks ago; the Eagles are somehow worse, and the uniforms are the same for both teams. As Kyle says, I hate this team.

Week 12 had the Chargers in their powder blue throwbacks (great look), the Cowboys in their throwbacks for their Thanksgiving game (good look), and the Jets in solid green, wearing their green pants for the first time this season (blech).
