Skate Bites: Suck It, Phaneuf
Yes, suck it. Our friends over at Philly Phaithful put it on the above t-shirt. Grab one here. #shameless
After the All-Star Game in Ottawa, we posted this video of Scott Hartnell mic’d up for TSN in Canada. The highlight of the clip was Hartnell’s post-assist reaction during what is usually a friendly affair– he told Dion Phaneuf to “suck it.”
Last night, the Flyers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-3. Along the way, Hartnell recorded a Gordie Howe Hat Trick (goal, assist, and fight). It was the second of his career, with the first coming on January 11, 2011 against Buffalo. But, this time, Hartsy added a new wrinkle to this most-storied of NHL achievements– he managed to record two-thirds of the feat and a #hartnelldown all in the span of about five seconds.
Reader J.T., via email, has a name for it: We now have a new hockey term– the Hartsy Hat Trick. It's a #hartnelldown, a goal, and a fight all in one shift. Awesome.
Consider it done, J.T.
At intermission, Ian Laperriere explained the significance of suck it, Phaneuf (via reader Mike). Here's the goal:
Hartnell, however, said the fight had nothing to do with what happened in the All-Star Game… even though we don’t believe him:
Q: What happened at the end of the goal there, you ended up getting in a fight?
We were battling I think for the first couple shifts and I kind of was going behind the net one time and I don't know if he pushed me or I caught an edge, I don't know what happened. I went off the boards and my neck was in kind of an awkward position and I thought it was somewhat of a cheap play. Then I get lucky bouncing like that in the air and it went in the net and I just went right off it. Just pretty standard, someone does something to you cheap, slashes, cheap plays like that you have to stand up for yourself, and he did.
Q: So no carry over from the "Suck it, Phaneuf" back at the All-Star game?
No, that was all in good fun. That All-Star game was pretty, you know, it was a great weekend. I heard the Twitter world loved it after we went out of there. Little things like that are fun of the game.
Claude Giroux got a kick out of the whole thing:
Q: How many times have you seen a fight like that after a goal?
“I wasn’t too sure what happened. I saw him go down. I thought it was a typical “hartnelldown.” I saw the replay and he got tripped. He stayed in there and got a goal and a fight. When he gets pissed off I think that’s dangerous for the other team because he’s on the puck, he’s jumping. It was a good goal for him.”
Yes it was, Claude.
Slow start to the morning thanks to last night’s quizzo. Congrats to The Buzzkill and Myrtle’s Acres for their first-place tie at Drinker’s:
