Screen Shot 2013-04-12 at 9.05.33 AMThe Flyers just released a statement from Paul Holmgren:

“I met with Ilya this morning and informed him that we are going to exercise a compliance buy out of his contract. This was a very difficult business decision to make for us and we want to thank Ilya for his time here and wish him all the best moving forward.”

This comes despite Holmgren supposedly giving Bryz’s agent, Rich Winter, assurance that the Flyers had no plans to buy Bryz out. Yet they announced the move just hours after the Stanley Cup Finals ended and before they can even officially do so (48 hours after Finals).

It also comes despite the fact that the Flyers don’t have a second goalie to play behind (or in front of…) Steve Mason.

Bryz will receive $23 million of the $34.5 million he is owed by the Flyers at a rate of $1.64 million per year over the next 14 years. That will not count against the cap, but it will, however, count against the butt of many, many jokes.
