I’m a big nerd about the future of TV, a time when Comcast and Verizon are mere bandwidth providers to stream a la carte networks, shows and other assorted content. You can already circumvent the cable box with an Apple TV, Roku or other similar devices. They come with almost limitless options between the likes of Netflix, Hulu and iTunes. Add in HBO GO, Watch ESPN and apps to stream all of the major sports except for the NFL, and streaming TV becomes a legit option. The NFL and the need to watch local sports (CSN) are really the only reasons I ever pick up the FIOS remote– everything else can be watched on Apple TV, online or on my iPad. And if you read CB enough, you’re likely aware that I was a BIG fan of House of Cards, Netflix’s first major self-produced and distributed show.

It just received nine Emmy nominations:

House of Cards nabbed nine nominations, including the coveted Best Drama, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Kevin Spacey), Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (Robin Wright) and Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (David Fincher).

That’s a first for an online-only show.

Arrested Development (I don’t like– please don’t shoot), which Netflix revived from the dead for a fifth season, got three nominations. And this is before we talk about Orange is the New Black, Netflix’s (outstanding) recently released dark comedy about a suburban white woman finding her way in a minimum-security prison. It wasn’t eligible for nominations, but some are calling it the streaming service’s best effort.

So, since there’s no Phillies again tonight, and the summer is long and TV is boring, do yourself a favor and sign up for Netflix* (like, $7.99 per month). Start with House of Cards – you can knock it out in a weekend  – and then make your way over to Orange is the New Black. Or, if you like breasts, watch the first 20 minutes of Orange is the New Black, then watch the full season of House of Cards and double back to Orange is the New Black. All episodes are released at once on Netflix, so binge watching is possible and encouraged.
