Someone get that man a mirror!

Someone get that man a mirror!

You’re welcome, Ruben Amaro, for that Riley Cooper story just about an hour before the trade deadline. Perhaps a few folks didn’t notice that the Phillies did nothing. Really– nada. Zip. Zilch. Didn’t even so much as pass a light gas into the winds of trade. Nope. Nothing.

But we get it. You want Chase to remain a Phillie, Papelbon is too expensive (your fault), Lee is too good, Young had a gun to your head, and no one wants Chooch now that he can’t sit through the National Anthem without getting all sqiurmy. We get it. You tried. Nothing doing. Wait… what’s that, girl? There was something doing? For the expiring contracts of Michael Young and Carlos Ruiz? With the Yankees? Behind the old fern?!

From Jon Heyman:

Yankees GM Brian Cashman and Phillies GM Ruben Amaro spoke on the phone around 3 p.m. ET Wednesday, an hour before the trade deadline, at which time Amaro confirmed what the Yankees had been reading in the media: Michael Young was willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to the Yankees.

So Cashman offered to send a prospect to Philly and pay the $5 million to go on Young’s deal. And Amaro rejected the deal.

Then Cashman asked about Phillies veteran catcher Carlos Ruiz, and was told that Ruiz, who has one home run this year, is not available.

GAH!!!

We all love us some Chooch, but his contract is up at the end of the year and, um, well… he’s not very good now that he’s off his Adderall: .248, 1 HR, 11 RBIs, only five extra base hits, the lowest OPS of his career, and seemingly decreased defensive skills. But yep– not available. Totally makes sense.

Meanwhile, Young was a rental in the best of scenarios. But what about the scenario where the carefree Phillies are seven games under .500 and an embarrassment to baseball, and potential third baseman of the future Cody Asche is ready, willing and possibly able? What then? Cash and a prospect? FUCK YEAH! But no. Just stay the course, that seems to be working.

For what it’s worth (not much at all), Ruben Amaro told the WIP Morning Show today that there was no deal out there and that Michael Young is one of the Phillies’ better offensive players. I’m not sure why that even matters at this point.

The Phillies lost 9-2 last night.
