Werth_dickJayson Werth was upset that Gio Gonzalez didn’t get over to first to cover on a potential double play in the first inning last night.

As you can see from the first angle in the GIF (very lower right corner), Werth immediately did that Werth-claps-his-hands-to-convey-all-emotions thing following the play. When the inning was over, Werth and Gonzalez, who presumably didn’t appreciate being shown up by his right fielder, exchanged words on their way into and in the dugout.

Davey Johnson summed it up after the game:

“Oh, just a little camaraderie going on,” Johnson said with a smile. “Jayson sometimes can get a little vocal. He thought that Gio was a little late covering first, and he was, but he falls towards third and with a bad back and falling toward third, he didn’t get over there.”

Being vocal and yelling at your pitcher from right field are two entirely different things. A real leader may have, you know, pulled his star pitcher aside and said: “Hey man, could have ended the inning if you got there. Those are things winning teams do. Even the pitcher has got to bust his balls. I saw Old Man Moyer do it in 2008.”

But no. Werth did the Werth-clap thing and called out his pitcher in front of 12-14 fans.
