Observation, because I like to observe things: If there was any question as to whether Chip Kelly needed a running quarterback, you now have your answer.

Johnny Manziel sat there, drinking water, when it was the Eagles’ turn to pick at 22 last night. The improbable was now reality and Kelly had a chance to draft the one QB on Earth whom many assumed, incorrectly, would be the perfect fit for whatever perceived style of offense they’d like Kelly to run. I was actually hyperventilating and borderline about to pass out as the possibility of blogging about Manziel slowly crept into my mind. He may have literally changed my life. Instead, Kelly and the Eagles traded down and drafted a guy we never heard of (don’t be that one commenter who claims that he did).

Kelly, in just over a full year as Eagles head coach, has been at the helm as the Birds drafted slow quarterback Matt Barkley, released fast quarterback Michael Vick, watched slow quarterback Nick Foles turn into a star, signed slow quarterback Mark Sanchez, and passed up on fast quarterback Johnny Manziel. Kelly had Vick, the accomplished prototype for fast, running quarterbacks, and let him walk. And then Kelly had a chance to draft Manziel, and not only did he not draft Johnny Football, he ran away from Manziel like a second grade boy runs away from the strangely attractive third grade girl who has cooties. Gross. Manziel was gross last night.

Your question is answered: Kelly doesn’t need, and perhaps doesn’t even want, a running quarterback. He passed up on Michael Vick and Johnny Manziel. If neither of those guys were a fit for whatever hairbrained system we expect the Eagles to run, then maybe no one is.
