Jon Stewart and the Daily Show writers undoubtedly picked up on the ridiculous backlash (from some) to his comments about Philly and the Phanatic. Setting aside the mildly concerning fact that the humor-deficient who took issue with Stewart’s jokes were more offended by his comments about the Phanatic and not, say, his veiled commentary about our perpetual inferiority complex, here’s what Stewart had to say for his apology, which led the show:

“Now obviously there is no need to rehash who called who a “f*cked up Jim Henson reject-looking piece of sh*t.” The point is, it was said… most likely by the one of us who doesn’t have a blow tickler in place of a functioning larynx. However after our taping, I realized my preferred baseball club, the New York Metropolitans, also has a mascot that also inhabits the netherworld twixed human and animal. He has a giant baseball instead of a head. Why an individual with that condition would take a job in a place where he is surrounded all day by bats… seems like a recipe for trouble.”
