WOW.

On the anniversary of the Mike Richards, Jeff Carter and James van Riemsdyk trades, the Flyers have traded Scott Hartnell and reacquired R.J. Umberger. June 23.

More soon. Keep it here.

UPDATE 1: Here’s the official release:

The Philadelphia Flyers have acquired winger R.J. Umberger and a fourth-round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for LW Scott Hartnell, according to general manager Ron Hextall.

Umberger, 32, recorded 18 goals and 16 assists for 34 points to go along with 26 penalty minutes in 74 regular season games this past season, his sixth with the Blue Jackets. He added an assist in four Stanley Cup Playoff games this year for Columbus.

UPDATE 2: This is a strange trade. Umberger, 32, and Hartnell, also 32, have virtually identical cap hits– Hartnell’s is $4.75 million per year through 2019, Umberger’s is $4.6 million per year through 2017. The Flyers give themselves some back-end relief on Hartnell’s (too-long) deal, but in exchange for a guy who had only 34 points in 74 games last year.

UPDATE 3: Randy Miller is an idiot:

Humberger.

UPDATE 4: Adam Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch:

The acquisition of Hartnell makes the Blue Jackets faster and more physical, and the trading of Umberger comes as a huge relief for Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen. Umberger had requested a trade at his end-of-season meeting with management following a late-season spat with coach Todd Richards over a series of healthy scratches.

I think the Flyers bought high on Hartnell, but trading him for a guy who’s a healthy scratch for a few back-end years of cap relief? Weird.
