UPDATE: Jason Wolf of Delaware Online reports that the Sixers will not be using this logo, but they did explore doing so:

That sucks. It’s actually pretty good.

Bit of random news yesterday as the Sixers’ purported new secondary logo was unveiled, via  (@conradburry) and (@RealGM).

Secondary logos can be used on everything from alternate jerseys to apparel to the court to graphics packages, etc. It’s unclear how the Sixers will use Ben here, but let’s break down his overall look anyway:

  • He seems equal parts pissed and gleeful to be flying through the air while blatantly palming the basketball, just like Allen Iverson. We’ll consider that a good thing.
  • I… am digging that jacket and I want one.
  • Errol?Voila_Capture 2014-06-24_08-36-20_AM
  • Though Ben looks like the sort of cat you’d find on a sticker in the early 90’s, his aggressive and fun nature balances the blandness of the primary logo, which I think Pat Croce once described as looking like a Christmas ornament. And Ben fits the whole 1776 thing much better than gold stars or a basketball-playin’ moose.
  • About the moose and other notorious mascot options– between this and the recent job listing for a new mascot, I would say that we can expect a new mascot this year and for said new mascot to look an awful lot like this jumpin’ Ben and not anything like Adam Aron’s please-touch-me-Sandusky-Ben from a few years ago:Voila_Capture 2014-06-24_08-27-56_AM
  • In a way, this new Ben elicits the same feeling as the 1970s-1980s era Phillies secondary logos:Voila_Capture 2014-06-24_08-30-40_AM Voila_Capture 2014-06-24_08-31-09_AM
