This, this is why I get on David Murphy’s case. Instead of detailing for his readers the genuinely entertaining and insightful interview between Mike Missanelli and Ruben Amaro, or writing a reaction that was remotely useful, informative or interesting, he decided to indulge himself with a weird and incoherent poem about the on-air exchange on 97.5 yesterday. This is how Murphy’s three-paragraph article began:

I have felt the rage of thunder where faith and doubt reside, and the counterclockwise clouds that form when hope and truth collide, and the presence of the cool breeze as flames draw ever near, and the ego mix with empathy and charge my atmosphere. I have felt within myself our violent affliction, I have felt within myself our natural condition, but I have never felt within myself the kind of inner turmoil that I experienced when I listened to Man of the People Mike Missanelli interview Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr yesterday on 97.5 FM.

WHAT?

He then proceeds to explain to everyone – but most likely Missanelli, whom Murphy has a thing for going after in the most ridiculous of ways – why Missanelli shouldn’t have used his bully pulpit on Amaro, completely ignoring the fact that Missanelli did exactly what fans, his listeners, wanted him to do – take Amaro to task for continually spouting incoherent nonsense – and that this is sports, not politics, molecular biology or 4,000-year-old philosophy:

The problem with the whole bully pulpit act is that it rarely results in illuminating discourse. Unlike a court of law, the rules are tilted heavily in favor of the cross-examiner, and the result often feels like one of those congressional hearings where a cranky old man sits behind a microphone and yells at the witness as loud and as fast as he can before he must cede the spotlight to somebody else.

The thing is, Amaro may have actually been the instigator. He called Missanelli uninformed, he said things that made absolutely no sense. Missanelli was happy to play along, but the result was a genuinely revealing interview which put Amaro’s stupidity on display for all to see… and that worked just fine for me.
