Guy the Phillies Originally Wanted to Give $50 Million to Cannot Throw 40 Pitches

When Cuban defector and supposed phenom Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez was being pursued by the Phillies last year, reports had his contract offer being in the $50 million range. After getting a look at him in person and checking into his medical records, the Phils eventually signed him to a modified contract worth $12 million over three years. So, how’s he doing?

“Gonzalez was activated off the 60-day disabled list Tuesday and optioned to Double-A Reading.

He had been pitching the last few weeks for Clearwater on a rehab assignment out of the bullpen.

The Phillies, of course, signed him with the potential of him becoming a No. 3 starter in the rotation.

But Gonzalez was placed on the DL with right shoulder inflammation after a spring training in which he struggled with control and velocity.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said Gonzalez was moved to the bullpen because he has not been able to keep his velocity or mechanics beyond 40 pitches.”

What this does mean, however, is that the guy they thought could be their third starter could end up being a set-up man or closer if Papelbon is dealt. Just don’t let him get caught in a long inning and throw forty-one pitches. Forty pitches only please. Because forty-one? That would be a disaster.
