Tony’s radio past:

What have you been up to since leaving 97.5?
Fixing up my mom’s house in South Philly where I grew up. Planning on moving back in when the expansion is done because she wants to go back to her own home.

What is Mike Miss really like?
Don’t really know him.

Ever gonna go back to 97.5?
Doubt it. They are more interested in saving money.

Was it all about the money or were you butting heads with the higher-ups at 97.5?
I don’t butt heads with anyone. They wanted me to leave to save money, thus the failure to negotiate a legit contract extension. I did all I was asked and beyond.

Any beef with Missanelli? He seemed like he always had it out for you.
I never had any issues with him. Don’t know what his apparent issues are with me.

Still keep in touch with Mayes?
Not really.

If given the opportunity, would you ever consider working at WIP again?
Of course. They are they dominant station and I was part of helping that morning show take off in the late 80′s.

What ever happened to Tim Cates?
He’s still in LA covering local sports on AM570 and you can hear him during national radio games as the studio host on NFL games. Great kid and dad to three lovely daughters.

TB, always loved your perspective. Hope you stay in the area. What was the most enjoyable part about working at the fanatic?
Doing live remotes and hanging with the fans at public places. A lot of hosts hate that, but it’s why we do this.

Any truth that since leaving the station, Charlie asked you drop by his office?
Yes, and I did meet up with Charlie at Tony Luke’s a couple of weeks ago.

Why did 97.5 have you and other hosts only work two-hour shifts a day? Was that all just a way to save money so they didn’t have to pay you much?
They paid me well, but never put me on the four hours they kept saying they would for three years. Why? You’ll have to ask them.

More annoying caller: Arthur Correct or Levi from Overbrook park?
Didn’t talk to Levi much. I love Arthur Correct because you can bust his chops and he comes back with a clever reply most of the time.

Do you have any gripe with the staff using your soundbites occasionally?
Nope. I count it as an “homage” to me. Like when Mike and Mike use my original “Stone Cold Lead Pipe Locks” from the 90′s.

Do you keep in contact with anybody from the Into The Night show?
Yep. Tim Cates, Raider Ryan and Magdaleno on twitter and Facebook. Petros and Money on AM570. I also go back and forth from time to time.

Really looking forward to this podcast. There’s been a void since you left and it’s finally about to end. When things went down with 97.5, what was Harry and Joe’s take on things? Did they back you? Have anything to say? The chemistry you three had I thought was hands down the best I’ve heard yet.
They were supportive, but could see the handwriting on the wall as to how they wanted me to leave so they didn’t have to pay me.

Been a fan since back in the day with Cannon and Company. Glad you’re looking to stay local. Do you still maintain ties with former colleagues?
Not as much as I should. So crazy the last decade trying to catch up with so many great people.

How is your relationship with Angelo Cataldi and Al at WIP. Do you keep in touch with those guys?
Don’t see Ang much, but had a nice chat in AC with him last summer. See Al and Rhea around more so.

Who was your favorite co-host you have gotten to work with in all of your years of radio?
So many great ones. ESPN radio with KO and Chuck Wilson was very satisfying and we did 7 hours 2 nights a week. Probably the best sports talk weekend radio shows ever produced.

Tony, looking back, what’s the best radio job (most fun) you’ve ever had?
This may come as a surprise, but it was being the morning host on the old WCAU 1210 in 1989. It was a full service show with news, sports, traffic, weather, interviews and phone calls. Unlike sports talk, we got to do fresh stuff every day.

Radio present/future and the Tony Bruno podcast:

How often will the podcasts be? Any set schedule yet?
Hope to do them at least once a week, two scheduled so far. You can see them here.

Will we hear you on local radio anytime soon?
Don’t know, not many local options. Have had tons of interest in other cities, but I don’t want to move.

What’s your take on the current state of sports talk radio, here and nationally? I would assume if your podcast venture is meant as an alternative to sports talk radio, then you find it to be as stale as most of us do.
I don’t listen to sports talk very much, it’s all micromanaged by PPM (Portable People Meter) crazed managers who react to weekly changes in the very flawed system.

Hey Tony. Been following your career for years and I will definitely be on top of these podcasts. Two-part question: What was the best part about working in national radio (Into the Night), and do you have any aspirations to return to national radio?
My agent looks around, but even national radio is loaded with so many shows that fill up time because there is too much of it. Very few hosts stand out and if I’m just another voice in the wilderness, I don’t want to do it.

Does it bother you that guys like Marks and Brace and Phil are not fit for college radio, yet they can have a regular slot in a market like Philadelphia?
I don’t root against other hosts. Anyone who gets a slot must be doing something to impress management to hire them.

Tony! I always loved your show. You always kept me entertained and I’ll be a fan no matter where you go. Always loved hearing you talk hockey. Any plans to do local radio in the near future? I know the two sports radio options aren’t ideal, but you definitely have fans out there.
Thanks Sean. I know that by my daily twitter and Facebook and on-the-street reactions. That’s why I’m doing the podcast.

Tony, your meeting with Andy Bloom a few months ago had to have had covered a possible gig back at WIP. Would you consider a part-time, weekend only thing? Would definitely help your Monday through Friday podcast too.
Don’t want to do part-time or weekend stuff at this stage of my career. Podcasts allow me to control my destiny.

TB, I miss your football picks this year.
I will start releasing them on my website and giving them away for free, despite no paycheck or health insurance in these tough economic times.

I want a Tony Bruno-Josh Elliott show on WIP!
I think Josh Elliott is busy moving up the food chain at NBC sports.

This Q&A has been more entertaining than entertaining that any Jon & Sean; Mike & Ike; Cuz & Rob; Mike & Mike; Cataldi Show: and most other sports talk in Phila. Be well, Bruno. Continued success.
It’s what I do. Thank you grasshopper!

Do you have a podcast?
Great question. I’ll get right on it!

Tony, do you believe that by and large, most sports talk hosts are credible in this city? When I listen to the radio now, it’s easy to think half the hosts have no clue what they’re talking about.
I don’t think athletes or coaches even know who 90% of the hosts doing sports talk are, so all you need is to get people to respond and generate ratings or your just another talking head.

Did you get to bring any sound bytes with you to your podcast?
Yep. I have my 360 sound machine and it will be used at the remote podcasts. Live Mic for the people and even phone calls.

How about a live remote from Lou Turks? Little Delco action and roast beef? YUMMM
Only if it’s the afternoon shift. The girls and food are much more real between noon and 6pm yo!

Going to miss 12 days of Bruno this year.
Hoping to do a 12 days on my website and podcasts to keep the tradition rolling. Stay tuned.

Ever think about doing local TV? You are great when you are on good day live. Your chemistry with those guys/gals is noticeable. Wish they would make a permanent spot for you there.
Thanks. That would be fun, but they never really expressed an interest

So clearly the only reason an idiot like Sean Brace has a job at 97.5 is because he is willing to work for peanuts while you actually have integrity and self-respect.
Is that a question or editorial comment?

Some friends stopped by:

From “Sean Brace”: I don’t have any talent. Can you help me?
Sorry. That is beyond my powers.

From “Mike Miss”: I am sorry for my jealousy towards you, as you know my college baseball career at PSU as a bat boy has made my ego ridiculously large and I do apologize to you.
Don’t sweat the small shit bro.

From anonymous: Biggest idiot in Philly sports. Cataldi, Eskin or Brace?
Sorry, I don’t answer Anonymous questions.

From “Howard Eskin”: Du U Phollow ME on Twwwiterr?
Yes, I love the breaking news and inside sources.

Some people actually asked about sports:

You know we got hockey action tomorrow night, yo. You ready?
Absolutely! didn’t watch any pre-season, but ready for real action!

Don’t you think that Shady McCoy has lost a step and that it’s time to give Chris Polk some carries?
Nope. I think the loss of Kelce and Mathis is the top reason they can’t run and Foles has been off and making bad throws. Foles hasn’t been good, but show me an immobile QB who plays well with bad blocking. Does Shady suck now after leading the league last year?

I love watching commercials but the NFL insists on trying to put a Thursday Night flag infested game on in between them. When will the NFL give up on these crap games?
When CBS decides to stop paying 34 million per game to air the non-stop sucky games.

I was thinking of flying to London next year to see an exciting NFL flag bowl in Wembley Stadium. Are you up for a road trip? Maybe we’ll get lucky and get to see the Bucs and Jaguars with Ed Hochuli refereeing.
Not to forget overpaying for bad British food and everything else in London. But sounds like a fun time for sure.

Tony, what Philly franchise wins the next world championship, and what’s the reasoning behind your answer?
Right now, the Eagles are building something that could win in the near future. Flyers always go for it every year, Sixers and Phillies have a lot of building to do.

Will I see you at any Sixers games this season?
Hope to get out to some. I want to see this thing come together and hope it happens in my lifetime.

Tony – glad to hear you’re doing well. The Tony & Harry Show is greatly missed. Can we expect to see you doing any tailgating on Saturdays at the Linc to support your alma mater? Any thoughts on the on-campus stadium rumor?
I think they should build an on campus stadium and lots of folks and students I know suggest its going to happen.

Are you a fan of Chip Kelly? And opinion on Nick Foles? Is he right for the birds?
Don’t know if Foles will win a SB, but most immobile QBs look bad when their O line is bad.

Tony, what do you think of the current state of the Eagles?
Despite stats, defense plays big but is on the field too much and secondary gets torched a lot. Special teams best in the league, but until they can get the O line straightened out without Kelce and Mathis, teams will go after Foles and shutdown Shady and that leads to rushed and confused Foles play.

Do you think Ed Hochuli throws more flags in the flag infested NFL than most Refs because he wants to get is giganto steroid enhanced biceps on TV?
Absolutely!

Umm … other?:

What’s been the most rewarding part of moving back home?
Being closer to my family: My 90-year old mom, 2 sisters, and 3 kids. It was tough being three thousand miles away for 11 years.

Is Jose from Norristown at the jug handle?
Don’t know. He is invited but would need a ride since he doesn’t drive.

Best bar in Philly?
Wow, so many great ones. Paddywhacks is nearby and solid at 2nd and South.

Best wings in Philly?
Biggest and best ones still at the Jughandle Inn in Cinnaminson, NJ.

Nicest athlete you ever covered?
Wow. Gotta go with Charles Barkley. Always kind and has something to say.

What strip club would you scooter to first on Delaware Ave., Risque, Pennsport, or that other one?
Risque is stumbling distance and I know the owner and GM. Don’t go to many establishments.

What’s Kyle smell like?
I think it’s either canoe or Hai Karate.

What do you think of the new chick on Good Day Live?
She’s very nice. Very tiny in person and perky.

I look forward to hearing the podcasts-you are missed on the airwaves. Will you come to my Halloween party? Costume only. Who would you dress up as?
Either Heisenberg (very easy) or Friar Tuck.

Walk to Syracuse. Fraud!
Guess the 10-year-old news travels slowly in your household!

Who’s got better boobs: Sheena or Cecily T?
Have not done enough investigative reporting to offer an articulate answer on that. Journalism is serious!

Oral or Anal?
Depends on the mood.

Did you do the ice bucket challenge this past summer?
I guess you missed this!

What color is your underwear?
Green. Boxer-briefs so I have both sides covered.

Do you realize partnering up with Kyle and this website will destroy your reputation?
Yes. I relish that new phase of my life.

Who’s hotter: Big titty Julie Doronbos or Susie Celek?
Both!

Seriously how big of an a-hole is Keith Olbermann?
Not to me because we have mutual respect and have been friends for 30+ years.

Tony, who do you think Liv should be with on Scandal, the President or Jake?
I think terrorists should break into the show and behead the entire cast. Then, I might tune in to see the ending. 🙂

John’s Roast Pork or DiNic’s?
Don’t want to sound like I’m copping out. Johns is legendary, but when I’m near the Reading Terminal Market, I gotta get a DiNics.

Is the scooter mafia going strong?
Still going, even though many days it’s a 1-bike motorcade thru the city.

Any potential Olbermann / Bruno alternative weekly radio? Old days reinvented.
You never know.

Which porn star milf would you pick (if you had to choose) Kendra lust, Courtney Cummings or Lisa Ann?
All 3 isn’t an option? Know Courtney and Lisa Ann in the flesh. Never met Kendra, but she seems very awesome too.

How is it living at Dockside?
As a great man once said “beautiful man!”

How do you think Olbermann’s show has gone so far?
It’s been a ton of fun and the fact they keep bringing me back – even with the new 5PM 1/2 version – means they like it. Feels good to walk into a place where everyone respects what you do. Also nice to head to NYC every week and work in Times Square studios.
