As soon as Tim Tebow signed as an Eagle (actually before that), the main question was: Why? Not necessarily “why?” because of a third string quarterback signing, but “why?” because of Tebow. Why sign Tebow if you aren’t going to use him, and how do you plan to use him? If you sign any other backup quarterback, none of this happens. But if you sign Tim Tebow, you probably plan to use Tim Tebow, someone whose earning potential outside of football is great enough that he doesn’t have to sign on to be a throwing dummy in practice. Probably. There are multiple uses for Tebow, and while he’s probably here as more than warm body for practices, he might just become an in-game tackling dummy… at least according to this guy’s sources, who say that Tebow is an Eagle in part to protect Sam Bradford from getting hit in short-yardage situations:

In talking to sources in and around the team, number one is they are looking for a package of plays to use Tim Tebow, particularly in short-yardage situations. Especially if they keep Sam Bradford, because you want to keep Bradford away from contact given the two knee surgeries that he’s had. Look for Tebow to be experimented with by Chip Kelly.

Number two thing is, Tebow really has no shot to start here. He’s going in as the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart. But Kelly knows that as a pure passer, Tebow really just doesn’t have what he needs to run his offense. He wants to get tougher with his running game, and that’s what he’s trying to take advantage of with Tebow, but he’s not the passer Kelly needs to run his offense.

Think of Tebow as a stunt double for Bradford. I can kind of see the resemblance, no?

If you’re gonna use him, he’s gonna have to throw a pass every once in a while. It’s a scary thought, but if you telegraph your run every time you’re in short yardage, it’s gonna stop working. Also it’s worth pointing out (as it will be every time we talk about Tebow) that they can just cut him before the season starts– no harm, no foul. But if they keep him around, that no harm thing hopefully passes on to Bradford.

Kyle: Don’t like this. Gimmicky, situation-specific players – especially quarterbacks – make me uneasy. See Vick, Michael and Offense, WildcatHey, it’s first and goal on the 2 and herrrrrrre comes Tebow. I wonder what play’s in store! Oh, surprise! It’s a fade to Riley Cooper… annnnnnnnnd it’s under-thrown and intercepted and being returned for a touchdown by Ronde Barber and the Bucs are going to the Super Bowl!!!!

Wait, what happened? I think I just blacked out. Whatever. Anyway, I don’t like the short-yardage quarterback.
