West Philly native (and point guard for Allegany College of Maryland) Samir Hill recently received some level of internet fame after video of him crossing over a couple of Philly Police officers went viral. Complex called up Samir for an interview and found out that the whole story is more or less the first verse of the Fresh Prince theme, with some variation. As it turns out, Samir is West Philadelphia, born and raised, and spends most of his days when he’s home on the playground, chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool, etc. The other day, a couple of cops were up to no good, and challenged Hill to some 2-on-2. He embarrassed them, and then, as Hill told Complex, a few days “after the video … they were trying to arrest me.” It all goes something like this:

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good cops who wanted to ball
Started making trouble in my neighborhood Got their ankles broken and it went viral
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared And then I got handcuffed

Really though, I don’t know what those cops were thinking. That was a bad idea from the start. Those shoes and all of that gear [Editor’s note: and the guns] are barely good for running straight lines, let alone making quick lateral movements.

Here’s how Samir described what happened:

Did they arrest you?

They didn’t arrest me for nothing. They were talking about how they thought they saw something. I was just down there [at the police station] for an hour and a half, then they let me go.

They didn’t explain to you why they took you down?

No, they didn’t explain it to me. They just took me in there, handcuffed me to a bench for an hour and a half. They were doing a search on the car. They searched the car for like an hour. They didn’t find nothing, and they let me go. The whole time they were telling me how they weren’t gonna lock me up, that they were targeting my friend.

So your friend was in trouble, and you just happened to be riding in a car with him.

Yeah, basically.

Nice.
