Not gonna lie: I’ve long thought it would be cool to stand out behind Ashburn Alley and fly a drone straight in from center field and right over home plate (at which point Ryan Howard would most likely swing at it), but then I always think better of it, because I don’t want to get fucking arrested. And because I don’t have a drone.*

This guy wasn’t so smart. And he had a drone. From 6 ABC:

Stadium security and police were called after a man was caught flying a drone during a Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park in South Philadelphia.

It happened around 4:00 Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say it was spotted flying near third base but it’s not clear how high the drone actually went.

Phillies staff saw the drone from inside the ballpark but it landed outside.

Action News was there as the operator was questioned by police.

Phillies security asked the man to erase images that were taken with the drone, citing intellectual property.

They say he fully cooperated.

HAHA! You got to love the Phillies and Major League Baseball– dude – who was also (legally) carrying a gun – flies an unmanned aircraft over a packed stadium with some people in it and the Phillies are concerned about the copyright on his aerial photos. Always the misplaced priorities. Always.

Sounds like the guy was just trying to take pictures, and Annie McCormick of 6 ABC is reporting that Eagles officials, who confiscated the drone (there’s some uncertainty if it took off and landed from Linc or CBP property), plan to give it back to him. No charges have been filed, but police will check with the FAA to see if he violated any restrictions, such as not being in line-of-sight of the drone or if he got high enough to be in Philly International airspace and landing patterns.

*My father-in-law has one, and his flying skills are quite impressive. Took one up in my backyard a few months ago and my neighbor legit thought it was a UFO. He flies the same Phantom drone shown here, and those things can easily get up thousands of feet. Doing this at a ballgame is just dumb… doing it near a major airport is dangerous.
