At one time, the Redskins bragged about having the biggest stadium in the NFL – pre-JerryWorld – and talked about their 200,000 strong season-ticket waitlist. Now, for the third time in five seasons, they’ve removed seats from FedEx Field.

According to the Washington Post, season ticket holders who went to the stadium’s open house saw the seats replaced by “tall metal poles jutting out from the concrete floor of the grandstand,” and complaints about FedEx Field in recent seasons have included “snarled parking, rowdy fan behavior, long lines, frequent advertisements and large numbers of interlopers from visiting teams.”

Now, those poles have been replaced … well, covered in a multi-colored FedEx tarp, turning the top section into a giant banner ad for shipping services. It was first seen above at last night’s Chelsea-Barcelona exhibition game, and below, via Chelsea’s twitter:

WaPo says “there are worse ways to cover empty seats in stadiums.” And they’re right: Totem poles, a “we’re not racist” mural depicting Native Americans paid off by Dan Snyder and/or photoshopped, or any image of the actual Redskins team– they all would have been worse options that Dan Snyder definitely considered.

But now, a stadium which Snyder expanded and whose size he bragged about is going in the opposite direction, for a more “intimate” feel. If only he changed his mind about some other stuff.

Kyle: Reminds me of The Vet when they used to add bunting all over the place to cover up the frigid chill thrown off by concrete and steel. Like lipstick on a pig.
