Report: Kim Ng one of the Phillies' Top Choices for GM Job
A couple of weeks ago, I wondered if the Phillies could be the first major sports franchise to hire a female general manager. In asking that, I mentioned Kim Ng as one of the possible candidates. Here’s what I said about Ng then:
“Kim Ng currently works for the league, but before that she’d held assistant GM roles with the Yankees and Dodgers, and was the first woman to interview for a GM position in MLB history. She interviewed for the GM position of the Dodgers, Mariners, Padres (twice), and Angels. She was one of four finalists for the Padres job in 2014. Between her time as assistant GM with the Yankees and Dogers, Ng reached the postseason eight times, the LCS six times, and won three World Championships.
And she’s interested. In a PBS Newshour piece from this April, Ng was asked about wanting to leave the league office and be a GM. “Seeing a woman general manager would be a great thing,” Ng said. “I think I have come close. So, hopefully, that’s still on the horizon for me or somebody else.'”
And now, as the process takes shape, Jon Heyman reports that Ng is one of the Phillies’ top candidates. “Philly has been unusually mum about its search,” Heyman said. “But it was learned that Kim Ng, the former Yankees, Dodgers and White Sox executive who works in the MLB Central office, is line for an interview there.” Also in line for interviews are Indians executive Ross Atkins, ex-Marlins GM Larry Beinfest, Angels assistant GM Matt Klentak, Royals assistant GM J.J. Piccolo, Rangers assistant GM Thad Levine and ex-Red Sox GM Ben Cherington.
Ng has interviewed for GM positions before, but never gotten one. Maybe the Phillies and Andy MacPhail can break that trend.
