Pete Mackanin is getting his grandpa on.

Pete Mackanin, the Phillies’ own Sad Papaw, is tired of his kids making all these gosh darn mistakes like the millennials they are, and he’s decided to do something about it. According to Todd Zolecki, Mackanin fines the team fifty cents each (or what my grandpa put in Easter eggs during our hunt) for every mistake they make.

“If you don’t get a bunt down, everyone pays 50 cents,” Mackanin said. “If you don’t hustle, everyone pays 50 cents. If you miss a cutoff man, everyone pays 50 cents.” It’s old-timey and petty, but it’s all about teaching accountability:

“It’s a way to be picky about little things, like you made it into second base, but you should’ve slid. You hit a double, but you coasted into second when you should’ve come around hard in case the guy bobbles the ball. Fifty cents. It allows me to be a real [jerk] about things like that. What, are you going to complain about 50 cents?”

Papa Pete has collected nearly $1,000 so far and plans to donate it all to his hard candy fund the Baseball Assistance Team (a non-profit that helps “members of the baseball family who have come on hard times and are in need of assistance”). I just hope Kyle doesn’t adopt a similar strategy, because I got bills to pay.

Kyle: OH MY GOD I LOVE THIS IDEA. What do we think, 50 cents for every typo, overused comma and Sixers post?
