Subtle. Slightly unhinged. A tad understated, but emotive. I give it a 4 (out of 10).

I’ve got to to be honest: DON’T LOVE IT. He seemed exasperated, almost relieved to have won. I want my hockey coach on the bench to be confident and in control. Peter Laviolette used to fist pump like a Trojan warrior cocking his arrow, or sometimes like an Eastern European villain in an action movie punching a captive in the neck so they “give up the passcode!” He once nearly killed Ville Leino, which is something I imagine the Sabres would’ve welcomed. Anyway, I appreciate the emotion from Hakstol, but the fist pump just didn’t do it for me. I actually thought his initial celebration and handshake combo was much better. LOOK:

SOLID. Emotion, joy, and a firm “we got this” handshake. Look at him approaching Gord Murphy’s palm – horrible celebration from Gord, was that a bunny hop? – like he’s Tom Hanks spearing a fish in Castaway in the second half of the movie once he became an expert spearman. That was the best part of Hakstol’s celebration– spearmanship. The fist pump could use a little work.

A note about the ratings: We rate based on the gold standard, the Jay Wright fist pump. Phil Martelli’s old-timey hooray marks the other end of the spectrum. Everything else is somewhere in-between.

My Nest cam was running as I watched the game-winning goal whilst laying atop a pile of baby toys. I give my initial surprise a solid 8. The rattle squeak that followed punctuated my spin on “The Guffaw”:
