Shoutout to reader Lindseyy, searching for her Morning Couts…

… but as much as I would like to call Flyers day-after recaps Morning Coots or Morning Cooter, the name would do a disservice to others such as Claude Giroux, Shayne Gostisbehere, the increasingly reliable and exciting goalie tandem of Steve Mason and Michal Neuvirth, Wayne Simmonds, and Jakub Voracek. So, for now, we’ll remain with non-branded fare.

Playoff chances

The Flyers are 8-1-1 in their last 10 and among the best teams in the league since the start of the year.

Their playoff chances are now up to 76%, using HockeyViz.com:

Look at those sticks crossing! LOOK AT THEM! The shafts are now completely overlapping!! Pretty soon the balls are going to touch.

And SportsClubStats.com, using a slightly different calculation, again has the Flyers as the biggest movers in the league:

? here we come.

Neuvirth says “no”

Big night for Michal Neuvirth as Flyers goaltending continues to be a positive. He had the right pad going last night like it was Tommy’s pinball flipper:

Neuvirth

Just for comparison – since one of those saves was on Patrick Kane – had this been Michael Leighton, he would still be waiting to board a boat to take him to right post. If he were lucky, he’d get there by the next game, which is almost three days from now. But thankfully, Big Bear shits in the woods and the Flyers have not a goaltending controversy, but a goaltending conundrum— WHO’S BETTER?!?!

Not sure what the answer will be, but Neuvirth gets major points for stiffing human penis thumb Pierre McGuire:

Today in Pierre McGuire’s Creep Factory– he went almost a whole interview with Brayden Schenn – except his “south side of Philly” weirdness – without giving off the vibe that he was storing the player’s parents in a meat freezer in a bunker somewhere below Avon Old Farms. Almost. Until he dropped Saskatoon at the end of the interview, leading to Schenn giving him the same look Michael Bolton used to give his co-workers in Office Space when they would liken him to that no-talent ass clown (which is a reference some of you missed in the comments the other day).

Guud goal

Something about the Flyers’ go-ahead goal last night reminded me of a certain Karl Dykhuis tally circa 1995. These are indeed the bounces you get when things are going your way, and indeed, things are going the Flyers’ way.

THINGS GOING THE FLYERS’ WAY

Voila_Capture 2016-03-17_09-29-53_AM

You know that’s the case when the Flyers’ city-leading PR department has to issue corrections in their favor. Tuesday night, they sent out a stat that the team’s 23 first period shots against the Red Wings were the most since 1984. That was wrong. Flyers PR man Brian Smith issued a correction yesterday and noted why this stat about 1984 was not like 1984:

Greetings Flyers and Blackhawks media,

There is a note in today’s packets regarding the 23 shots on goal the Flyers had in the first period last night against Detroit. The Elias Sports Bureau initially showed it to be the most shots in a first period by the club since a 25-shot first period on 1/29/84 at CHI.

After that note posted last night, I received an inquiry from Bob Herpen and one other individual who were both in possession of newspaper boxscores from the game indicating there were 20 shots in the first. A check of our archives this morning turned up a press box sheet with the same number.

Bob Waterman did a little digging into the matter and found a discrepancy that is best explained by him directly, and is below.  The new correct note is bolded.

— Assuming that 20 was the real total for that game in 1984, the last 23+ shot first period for the Flyers was on Feb. 13, 1976 against the Rangers at MSG. — The Flyers had exactly 23 first-period shots in that game (and a quick check of the newspaper the next day confirms that).

You know things are going your way when your corrections say, “Oh, you know that feat we told you about? It wasn’t the first time in 30 years… it was actually the first time in 40 years.”

You know what else was about 40 years ago… just sayin’.
