I am BLOWN AWAY by the responses I’m getting to this Tweet. Of the over 99,900 Tweets I’ve sent out – holy shit – this one, as much as any other, is getting nasty feedback. Look at this:

There’s more.

Am I being irrational about Blount? Absolutely. Did he burn me in fantasy? Actually no– in fact, it’s the opposite, he was a great fantasy player this year who provided instant touchdowns. The problem was I hated myself every time I even considered him because he was nothing more than a product of Bill Belichick’s genius, which might I remind you also turned Dion Lewis into a three-touchdown performer in the Wild Game game and a lacrosse player into the star of the AFC Championship game. In fact, Belichick is notorious for getting something out of rotating cast of no-name backs and then discarding them before they go on to have… absolutely no success anywhere else. So if for no other reason than the Belichick is done with this guy so I want no parts of him theory, Blount does little to excite me. That’s why I can’t help but feel like Howie Roseman will come out as the sucker in this, and Belichick will yet again be snickering at the Eagles’ expense.

Is this a low-risk deal on a player who ostensibly fills a need the Eagles have? Yes! Which is why I think some are interpreting my snark and tongue-in-cheek comments about hating Blount as me being outraged at the signing. I’m not. It’s hard to be over a one-year, $1.25 million deal. But I truly don’t get the excitement and think people are way overvaluing Blount’s role as A BRUISER. While big and certainly more reliable than anyone the Eagles have in short-yardage, his size and, quite frankly I think his name – BLOUNT! – trick people into thinking he’s a knock-your-teeth-out Jerome Bettis type. But that’s not entirely accurate. As pointed out by Jimmy Kempski, who sang Blount’s praises as a short-down back, Blount is sneaky fast and quick and more athletic than you think, for his size, and he largely benefitted from a scheme that forced defenses to respect the hell out of the pass. Blount was quick enough to run past defenders once he reached the second level, which wasn’t always that difficult since defenses couldn’t afford to load the box. Look:

You see a big, athletic back– I see a guy whose talents, which largely avail themselves in open space created by a dynamic literal dynastic offense, will be mis-used by Doug Pederson, who will treat Blount as a fullback type player who will signal to every person in the stadium that the Eagles are about to run the ball directly up the middle.

Again, I know I’m being completely irrational. I’ll admit that. I’d love to be wrong. I want to be wrong. But let’s just revisit the conversation in mid-October and see how we feel about Blount, whom I think will be a borderline non-factor for the Eagles this season.
