For those of you growing tired of waiting for the Phillies’ brass to do something as a follow-up to its surprising December acquisition of first baseman Carlos Santana, this Tweet from Ken Rosenthal might perk you up:

I dont’t want to say I told you so, but screw it—I told you so. I took one look at that face and knew that John Middleton is tired of fucking around.

This, friends, is not a guy that would like to win, or would prefer to win. No, this is a guy that needs to win. After seeing this, I’m stunned Jake Arrieta and Yu Darvish weren’t on separate red-eye flights to Philly.

In fact, the prospect of a sluggish market that could ultimately come back to the Phillies and bring a big-name free agent here is something I wrote about last week—right after I opined that Gabe Kapler looks like he’s always ready to get down and reenact the pottery scene from Ghost.

What’s more, as free agency continues to slog forward, it’s entirely possible, if not likely, that a slow-developing market may provide the Phillies with an opportunity to make a substantial, team-friendly acquisition in the coming weeks that drastically shapes the roster and their ability to immediately compete.

Now, whether or not the Phillies get serious and push their chips to the center of the table on guys like Darvish, Jake Arrieta, or another elite talent remains to be seen, but there’s something brewing over in the offices at Citizens Bank Park and it looks increasingly likely that the organization’s ownership and front office is getting ready to pounce on an opportunity to push its rebuild forward.
