It continues to be a whirlwind of an offseason for the Eagles and things don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Blink and you will miss the next move. The latest news comes this morning from ESPN’s Field Yates, who reports that the Eagles have re-worked the contract of tight end Zach Ertz:

The Eagles also restructured Ertz’s deal last March–the same day that they signed Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles to a two-year contract. That proved to be significant, yes?

It’s another move that frees up immediate cap space, but pushes up the hit in future years. The Eagles made a similar alteration to left tackle Lane Johnson’s deal earlier this week.

It remains to be seen what Howie Roseman elects to do with the additional $5.4 million in cap space. The team is expected to officially sign defensive tackle Haloti Ngata today, but they now have the short-term financial flexibility to make additional moves. Still looming are key decisions on the futures of defensive end Vinny Curry and linebacker Mychal Kendricks, both of whom could be traded or released to free up additional money.

It also remains possible that the Eagles could roll over money into future seasons and allocate it towards what promises to be a lucrative Carson Wentz extension. Still, with the way Roseman has aggressively navigated free agency since his return from the abyss, the smart play seems to be to expect the unexpected.
