This was supposed to be a very calm sports night, in America and certainly in Philadelphia. The NBA Finals are two nights away, no one here is really that into the Caps and the Golden Knights, the Phillies are in Los Angeles. It should have been a pretty easy night’s sleep.

Then the Sixers, coming off a series disemboweling by a crippled Boston Celtics team that couldn’t beat LeBron James and eleven guys named Steve in a Game 7 in Boston, extended their head coach’s contract an additional three seasons.

Ordinarily, that would have been your lead story for at least a day or two. But this is the Sixers. Ask Allen Iverson: Prosperity doesn’t have a great shelf life with this franchise.

So instead of three days of “why the extension?” on local sports talk radio, it’s going to be three days of “is the Sixers’ general manager just a handful of Twitter eggs?”

Ben Detrick, of Bill Simmons’ site The Ringer, tossed his piece “The Curious Case of Bryan Colangelo and the Secret Twitter Account” onto the internet like he was throwing a rat into a wedding ceremony tonight. The premise of the article, which you can read here, is that Colangelo has actually been using multiple burner Twitter accounts to disseminate information and speculation that makes him look good and makes others (Sam Hinkie, Jahlil Okafor, etc.) look bad.

It is clear that Detrick’s piece is the result of months of arduous and meticulous data gathering. It is also clear that Detrick’s piece is about as coherent as the plot of “The Usual Suspects,” right down to the point where the falling coffee cup says “Hinkie” on its underside. You’re gonna want to settle in for this one.

A deep dive on this piece is coming in the morning. Which is probably a good thing, because this is, um, a developing story:

Life comes at you fast.
