It’s quiet…

Too quiet…

Actually nah, these things take time. I know everyone is clamoring for a resolution to the Bryan Colangelo saga, but there are all sorts of tricky legal avenues to navigate and whatnot.

We got the slightest of updates today from Adrian Wojnarowski. It wasn’t a Woj bomb. Was it a Woj splash? What is much less impactful than a bomb? A Woj flickering? A ripple?

Anyway, he’s got a story on ESPN that names the law firm the Sixers are using:

The Philadelphia 76ers hired the law firm of Paul/Weiss to investigate the connection between president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo and secret twitter accounts, league sources told ESPN.

….

The National Basketball Players Association hired Paul/Weiss to deliver a special report on the business practices of former executive director Billy Hunter in 2013. It is believed that Paul/Weiss is using cyberintelligence consultants to assist them in the investigation, which sources say has included Colangelo surrendering his phones and electronic devices for scrutiny.

That’s the new information in the story. Paul/Weiss has offices in Washington, Wilmington, and New York, plus five foreign countries.

Cyberintelligence sounds kind of fancy, but that’s what we’re dealing with here – social media accounts and cell phones and email addresses that may or may not be connected to the alleged Twitter burner accounts. We can sit here all day and say we’ve connected the dots and unearthed the circumstantial evidence, but people aren’t convicted on circumstantial evidence, or at least they shouldn’t be. Paul/Weiss needs more than assumption. They need to match a phone number or email address to Colangelo, his wife, his dad, his dog, or whoever was responsible. Or they need a confession.

So we’ll see if one of those things happens sooner rather than later.

But as far as the PR angle of the Sixers and how “bad this makes them look” or whatever, I think that’s overrated. See, half of the NBA thinks the Sixers are a joke already because they disagreed with the Process. You’ve seen the guy in the comments section who always writes, “FUCK EMBIID, FUCK FULTZ, FUCK THE FUCKING PROCESS,” right? People like him view the franchise as a joke, even though it has two superstars and is coming off a 52-win playoff season.

So what does public perception matter anyway? A large chunk of media/fans spent the last four years ragging the shit out of Sam Hinkie and a “loser mentality” and will always affix an asterisk to future success because it wasn’t done “the right way,” as if there’s only one set of rules by which you can rebuild. Plus, it’s 100% on-brand Philly to play the “no one likes us” card and not care what the external view looks like anyway.

The main issue here is getting your house in order ahead of the draft and free agency. That’s the real problem, and the longer this drags on, the more it distracts from the real task at hand.
