Baseball returned after a four-day absence on Friday, and the Phillies finished the weekend with two gems and a dud.

Friday saw the Phils’ offense explode for a six-run second inning and a four-run eighth inning en route to an 11-5 win over the San Diego Padres. Carlos Santana had four RBI with Cesar Hernandez and Odubel Herrera driving in two runs each. But that came after Jake Arrieta gave up four runs in the first inning. He ended up going 3 1/3 and giving up all five runs off six hits and three walks with just two strikeouts.

After a Saturday torrential downpour, the teams played two yesterday. The Phils didn’t get the message in the first game and got blown out 10-2 in an awful game by the defense. San Diego scored three runs in the first, sixth, and ninth innings respectively. Despite having nine strikeouts, Nick Pivetta gave up six runs off eight hits in 5 1/3. The Phils were still alive in the top of the sixth, but a Hernandez fielding error led to a Padre rally for their second batch of three runs. Maybe wear sunglasses next time.

But it ended very well for the Phils as Vince Velasquez pitched seven shutout innings and gave up only two hits with seven strikeouts in a 5-0 win. Rhys Hoskins had a three-run homer in the seventh to help pull the team away.

The team is still in need of help pretty much everywhere. The trade deadline is eight days away, and there’s still talk of multiple players potentially coming to Philly. The biggest need is probably in the bullpen, and that need may have increased with Edubray Ramos placed on the 10-day DL. He strained his left patellar tendon in the sixth inning of the first game in the Sunday doubleheader.

Elsewhere, Aaron Altherr and Mark Leiter Jr. have been optioned to Triple-A. We’ll find out the corresponding moves later today.

One will probably be activating Zach Eflin off the DL. He’s scheduled to start in tonight’s series opener against the Dodgers at 7:05 PM on NBC Sports Philadelphia. It’ll mark the return of Chase Utley, and the arrival of Manny Machado in Dodger blue. Don’t boo either one.

One might think going from safety to linebacker would make speed less of a factor, but for Gerry, it became an obstacle – because in football, “speed” means more than being able to run fast.

“Being able to adapt to the speed,” Gerry said about what most flummoxed him when making the switch. “The game play just happens a lot faster at the linebacker position; the closer you are to the football, the faster things happen.

“I feel a lot more comfortable, a lot more confident in my ability. The offseason really treated me well, too, being able to compete in the weight room and compete in OTAs. Just to reassure [myself of] my ability to make those plays that I made in college. It helped a lot.”
