The past and present collided this weekend for both the Phillies and Eagles.

We’ll start off with the NL East leading Phils, who continued their four-game series with the Miami Marlins on Friday. Vince Velasquez pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings and gave up just two hits on seven strikeouts, while Roman Quinn drove in two runs in the bottom of the eighth to aid a 5-1 win. Before the game, former center fielder Shane Victorino officially retired:

Saturday was an emotional night at the ballpark, as the team inducted Roy Halladay and Pat Gillick into the Wall of Fame. And Zach Eflin pitched one of his better games of his young career. He went eight innings and gave up three runs on four hits with six strikeouts as the bats helped the Phillies to an 8-3 win. Nick Williams got things started in the bottom half of the first with a three-run homer, while Asdrubal Cabrera and Cesar Hernandez each hit two-run shots. It was Cabrera’s first homer as a member of the Phils.

Sunday honored the ’08 World Series champions as Alumni Weekend came to a close:

But it did take some time for the scoring to begin. And it started in the bottom of the sixth when Odubel Herrera and Maikel Franco delivered RBI singles for a 3-0 lead. But the Marlins struck back with a two-run homer by Derek Dietrich off Aaron Nola and Justin Bour’s solo shot against Seranthony Dominguez.

But Cabrera struck gold again in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run bomb to give the Phils the 5-3 win and another four-game sweep.

The Phillies start a six-game western road swing tonight against the NL West leading Diamondbacks. Jake Arrieta takes the mound, with first pitch at 9:40 PM on NBC Sports Philadelphia. This will show who the Phillies really are, as the team still has a game and a half lead on the Braves in the NL East.

It was a similar weekend for the Eagles. The current Birds had a light practice Friday after having an intense session the day before.

The team had off Saturday, but the spotlight was on a former Eagle. Brian Dawkins was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and his speech was amazing.

Sunday was also packed with news. The expected signing of Corey Graham happened, and this was the only place he would play in. It sounds like this will be his final season.

“I knew if I did decide to play again, it would be here. I wasn’t going to go anywhere else,” said Graham, who has played 10 seasons, winning Super Bowl rings with the Ravens and the Eagles. “I love everything about it here. … I missed the guys.”

“It was closer than people think,” Graham said, when asked about retirement. “All the players, they’re just like, ‘We were just waiting for you to come back.’ They just assumed I was going to come back. Being home with my family … they wanted me there, I enjoyed it, so it definitely was close. What it all came down to was another opportunity to try to win again, another opportunity to be around the guys. … When it was all said and done, I wanted to be here again.”

About an hour before the open practice at the Linc began, the team announced matching extensions for Doug Pederson and Howie Roseman until 2022. This wasn’t expected, but both guys did deserve it. Speaking to the media instead of Jim Schwartz, Lurie was happy about how the offseason went and commended Roseman’s evolution as a GM since his one year off.

As for practice, we didn’t see Nick Foles or Zach Ertz, and Carson Wentz was held out of 11v11 drills again. Sidney Jones started as the nickel corner again and he’s starting to build some separation.

The Sixers made a depth signing by bringing in center Norvel Pelle, who played on this year’s Summer League squad.

Over in Johannesburg, Joel Embiid participated in this year’s NBA Africa Game and scored 24 points.

He also did some community service and petted lions and tigers.

But he’s also using the tweets made by Bryan Colangelo’s wife as motivation to win MVP this year.

The Union fell to Portland 3-0 in Oregon Saturday night. They return to action Wednesday night as they host the Chicago Fire in the US Open Cup semifinals at 7 PM.
