The Phillies are trying to snap a six-game losing streak tonight in Colorado. In order to do that, they will need to do things like put the ball in play, safely reach first base, and successfully navigate the subsequent bases in order to safely cross home plate. By doing so, they will “make runs.” That’s typically how the game works. But, you see, the Phillies are struggling to simply put the ball in play as I write this post. Rockies starter German Márquez tied a Major League record with eight consecutive strikeouts to start tonight’s game. After two Phillies hitters reached base, Márquez then closed the third inning with his ninth strikeout of the night. Here are each of the nine K’s. Behold the wondrous futility:

Is now a good time to mention that Gabe Kapler will be back in 2019?#BeBold(er)

Update: Turns out the Phillies only struck out five more times after the third inning. Improvement! On the flip side, they did not plate a run while also allowing the Rockies to score 14 times. Thus, they have been outscored 34-4 so far in this series and have allowed 10+ runs in three consecutive games for the first time in over 60 years.

In a sick way, I’m kind of excited to see what happens in tomorrow’s finale. 15-0? 24-0? Will they even finish the game? I’m completely in.
