Best Overall: DraftKings Sportsbook

draftkings sportsbook nj

DraftKings Sportsbook review

DraftKings Sportsbook is another pick for one of the best all-around NJ sportsbooks. It does everything well and a few things great.

They offer some of, if not the most, action among all legal sports betting sites in NJ. The back-end infrastructure is top-notch. Their signup bonus is better than big-name competitors, and they offer a rotation on ongoing odds boosts.

What’s more, DraftKings Casino is contained in the sportsbook app. It includes the best available live Blackjack experience in New Jersey.  The interface could be simplified a bit, but that’s a nitpick. DraftKings is top-notch.

Our 3 favorite things about DraftKings are:

1. Constant promotions

Once you log in to the DraftKings NJ app, you’ll be greeted with a number of promotions at the top. As you can see in the screenshot below, there are several running every single day. Personally, I like to take advantage of these promotions and odds boosts whenever possible:

2. Variety of sports offerings

In that same screenshot above, you can see how many diverse sports markets DraftKings offers to bettors. NBA, NFL and men’s college basketball are certainly very popular. Then you have a PGA event, English Premier League and Spanish La Liga soccer and even horse racing odds available through the DK Horse Racing app (in select states). Any sport you can think of, DraftKings has you covered! Garden State bettors can’t bet on college teams located in New Jersey (Rutgers, Seton Hall, etc.), but other college sports around the country are open!

3. User-friendly design

DraftKings is our favorite NJ sportsbook app because it looks and feels … well … cool. You can’t discount the cool factor when it comes to picking a book. DraftKings has an easy-to-navigate app and its color scheme is eye-catching. It’s hard to find a sportsbook that does things better than DraftKings when it comes to a user experience.

Runner-Up: FanDuel Sportsbook

fanduel sportsbook nj

FanDuel Sportsbook review

FanDuel’s interface is awesome, and the best of the bunch so far, making it the best NJ sportsbook.

It just looks good. One of the best things it has going for it is its live data visualization built right into the in-play bet areas. This is one of the things we wish DraftKings would implement.

FanDuel might not offer betting on as many sports as its counterparts, yet, as its focus is on the more traditional American sports. For most online sports bettors, this is a nonissue—unless you want to get really exotic.

Best Deposit Options: BetRivers Sportsbook

BetRivers review

BetRivers Sportsbook (formerly SugarHouse in New Jersey) is not the household name that DraftKings and FanDuel is, but they have been out ahead of the curve with legal sports betting by offering industry-leading deposit options.

Right now, you can get money into your BetRivers app account in New Jersey with: online banking, credit or debit card, BetRivers Play+ card, Pay With Cash at 7-11, PayPal, Cash at Cage, and wire transfer.

BetRivers basically defined the market for providing customers the most ways to get money into their accounts. Their $250 second-chance bets, while not the largest, is the best among NJ sportsbooks because it requires only a 1x play-through before it is eligible to withdraw. DraftKings, on the other hand, is 25x.

Best Casino-Based Sportsbook: BetMGM

BetMGM

Casino-branded sportsbooks have struggled in New Jersey in the past. Mobile-first players like DraftKings had a significant advantage over less-well-developed casino brands.

However, BetMGM has broken through that barrier and is the best of the developed casino brands. What we like most is their unique signup bonuses– they offer 100-1 odds boosts on select events for new players. This is a fun way to get new people signed and the type of promo we’ve seen is popular with new bettors.

How To Bet on Sports in New Jersey

New Jersey sports betting apps are everywhere in the Garden State. In addition to betting at 12 physical sportsbooks, users can bet online through the web and on mobile apps. You must be 21 or older and physically located in the state to place a bet.

We’ve detailed options available to New Jersey sports bettors above and have shared some of our favorites.

1. Choose your NJ sports betting app

So your first step as a new bettor in the Garden State is simply this — choose the NJ sports betting app that best suits your preferences.

2. Register for an account

Then you’ll need to register for an account. Doing this will require you to confirm you’re at least 21 years of age and located within the borders of New Jersey. You’ll need to enter your full name, your address, your birthdate and other personal information to verify your identity.

3. Collect your bonus offer

Next up is earning your bonus offer. Once you’ve successfully registered for an account with your favorite sports betting app, you’ll need to make your first deposit. When you’ve added money to your account, search for your favorite sport, place your first bet and … presto! Your bonus bets should land in your account shortly.

How do you make your first deposit, you ask?

Well, here are more helpful things to know while betting on sports in New Jersey.

NJ Mobile Betting Apps Deposit Methods

This is something that often doesn’t get much attention from potential bettors, but the ease at which you can deposit and withdraw from betting apps is a major factor in the overall user experience.

NJ online sports betting apps offer the following deposit options (options vary by sportsbook):

While customers had issues early on with banks and credit card companies declining gambling transactions, these problems have mostly been solved.

Ways to Bet in New Jersey

There are many ways to get in on the action in New Jersey, one of the top sports betting states in the country.

From your standard moneyline bets to props to parlays, here are some of the ways you can bet on sports in the Garden State:

The Big 3: Spread, Moneyline and Over/Under

Below is a list of odds on FanDuel withe the 3 most common types of bets: Spread, Moneyline and Over/Under picks in that order.

The spread tells you the favorite for each matchup. The Lakers are the stronger team between these pair, and placing a spread bet on the Lakers would mean Los Angeles needs to win by 6 points to make a successful bet (because, obviously, you can’t score half a point.) It works exactly the same in the inverse – the Nets would need to either win or lose by less than 6 to mark a successful Nets spread bet.

Moneyline is simply picking this team or that team to win, no matter the score. The lower the number, the heavier the favorite. The Lakers are considered a moderate favorite to win this game. If the number was -300/350 or lower, that would be considered a pretty considerable favorite.

Over/under is the simplest of them all. It’s asking the bettors to add the final score of both teams together and pick whether it will be above or below the set number. So, if the final score between Los Angeles and Brooklyn was 110-111, this game would have hit the under.

Prop Bets

Prop bets are betting on the performance of one team or player. As stated, there can be player specific or team specific prop bets.

This comes in a variety of ways, but the most common you’ll see is over/under a certain amount of… something. In basketball that could be points scored, in football it could be yards and in baseball it could be bases. It’s anything that doesn’t have a direct tie to the outcome of the game, rather the performance of the players or team itself.

Keep in mind that in New Jersey does not allow for collegiate prop bets, so you’ll only be able to bet on pros for your prop betting needs. College prop bets are frowned upon in most U.S. states with legal sports gambling.

Parlays

This could be a combination of the above 2 sections on one card, which raises the odds with the mandate that all “legs” of the parlay must be correct. So going back to the above screenshot, your parlay could consist of the Lakers Moneyline, Over 223 and LeBron James over 23.5 points. If all of those legs hit, you’d win big. If 2 of those legs hit but Lebron only scores 22, sorry – you’re out of luck!

What You Can And Can’t Bet On In New Jersey

Cannot

-In-State College Sports

There are some events you cannot bet on in the state of New Jersey. Specifically, the Garden State’s legality on college sports is slightly unorthodox.

You can bet on college sports, but it must be in a matchup between teams or individuals outside the confines of the state. In other words, you cannot bet on Rutgers or Seton Hall, nor can you bet on a collegiate game played within the borders of NJ. So, if Alabama travels to Piscataway for football, you can’t place a bet on the Crimson Tide.

-High School Sports

In the same umbrella as college sports in-state, you cannot bet on amateur sporting events in NJ, which includes high school football, basketball and so on.

-Politics

You are not allowed to bet elections, whether state or federal. So, no betting on the 2024 U.S. Presidential election or any other regarding a political future.

Can

-Professional sports events

Obviously, you can bet on all professional sports leagues, such as the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS, NASCAR and more.

-Entertainment Awards

Unlike some other states, you are allowed to bet on award shows in New Jersey, including the Academy Awards, The Emmy Awards, The Grammy Awards, ESPN Awards and so on.

-Esports

Also unlike other states, New Jersey allows for betting on popular Esports such as Fortnite, Rocket League, League of Legends, etc.

Where And How To Bet On Sports In New Jersey

You can bet on sports in-person and online in New Jersey. Here are the specifics for NJ online sports betting:

You must be located within the state when you bet. All sites and apps use geolocation services to determine your exact location with GPS (don’t both with a VPN because it won’t work).

You don’t have to be a New Jersey resident to bet, however. You just have to be there when doing so. If you work there or are at the Shore on vacation, you can access online betting apps just like you would if you were at a casino.

This goes for depositing and withdrawing funds, as well. So, if you win a bet you placed while in New Jersey and want to withdraw those funds from a different state, you’ll have to go back to NJ to access the app and withdraw to your bank account. It’s not ideal, and regulators are working on ways to allow betting across state lines, especially where online sports betting is legal, but this is not something that is in place yet.

Racetracks and Casinos

Bettors looking to get in on the action right away should head to the closest casinos and racetracks. They’ll get a head start, as state regulators can give any casino or track that wants to host wagering an immediate temporary license to do so after the law is signed. This allows the large gambling houses to start taking action right away while the commission adopts more comprehensive regulations down the line.

Monmouth Park in Oceanside was the first location to accept bets. It bet big that sports wagering would eventually be legalized and invested $1.5 million into converting one of its bars into a sportsbook.

Here are the casinos that currently feature land-based sportsbooks:

Casino Sportsbook Address

And here are the race tracks that offer land-based sportsbooks:

Raceway Sportsbook Address

Meadowlands Racetrack FanDuel, SuperBook 1 Racetrack Dr, East Rutherford, NJ 07073
Freehold Raceway ESPN BET, betParx 130 Park Ave, Freehold, NJ 07728

Kiosks and Self-Serve Machines

Bettors may not have to visit a window and speak to a live person to make a bet; the law permits the use of self-service machines and kiosks to take bets within an individual sportsbook.

Winning Bets Must Be Collected Within 1 Year

If any winning bet is not cashed within one year, the casino or track and the state get to split your winnings. The law is silent on the way to cash a winning ticket, but it does give each sportsbook the power to create its own house rules. Check your ticket and the book for information concerning cashing winning bets.

Be prepared to disclose personal information

The law requires any sportsbook to have procedures to take “personally identifiable information” from any person making a bet of $10,000 or greater. This is in line with federal money laundering and banking statutes governing the transfers of large amounts of money. The casinos and state need to make sure big bets aren’t fraudulent.

New Jersey sports betting history

Dominick DeBonis, left, and Jake Frey travelled from Manhattan to place bets at the FanDuel Sportsbook in the Meadowlands Racetrack on Thursday, March 21, 2019 in East Rutherford. This is the first year sports fans can legally place bets during March Madness in New Jersey.
Meadowlands March Madness Gambling

The path to legal sports betting in New Jersey was paved on May 14, 2018, when a Supreme Court ruling overturned a 1992 decision that effectively made sports gambling illegal in the US everywhere except Nevada, which was grandfathered in.

Officially Christie v. National Collegiate Athletic Associate, the case pit the state of New Jersey against the NCAA and the four major sports leagues in a battle over whether states had the right to legalize sports betting. Put simply, New Jersey was for it and the leagues were against it.

In 2014, New Jersey repealed a law that prevented sports gambling, but it was immediately challenged citing a 1992 federal law that prohibited state-sanctioned sports betting. The law didn’t itself ban betting on sports, but it directed states not to permit it. That’s the crux of the argument the Supreme Court heard– whether the federal government directing states not to do something was the same as the government doing it themselves.

New Jersey challenged that this was a federal overreach, and won.

The NCAA and other major sports leagues technically opposed New Jersey’s move (though the NBA has since come out in favor of legalized betting and most other leagues are also probably in favor of it) on the grounds that the law didn’t instruct states to do anything, with their stance rooted in the sanctity of sports, match-fixing, social ills and other relatively abstract reasons that aren’t fully grounded in reality.

The court ruling in favor of New Jersey paved the way for states to legalize sports gambling.

Shortly after the ruling, Governor Phil Murphy signed into law a bill legalizing sports betting in New Jersey. With NJ online sports betting, New Jersey is the first state following the Supreme Court’s ruling to allow both casino-based and online sports betting.
