It was an ugly season opener, pretty ugly if you ask me. But in the end, the Eagles are 1-0 and Julio Jones failed to catch a touchdown on the final play once again.

After a 45 minute delay and a banner ceremony, the game finally began. And both offenses sucked. In the first half, the Falcons were at least making decent drives down the field while the Eagles took a while to heat up. But after a half of just field goals and plenty of penalty flags, the Eagles dropped this gem.

It wasn’t the Philly Special. It was actually the play the Patriots ran in Super Bowl LII that Tom Brady dropped. That play was called “Philly Philly.” My god Doug. And that jumpstarted the scoring for the night with a Jay Ajayi touchdown.

The Falcons responded with a Tevin Coleman nine-yard run after a wild few possessions that started with Tre Sullivan touching the ball with his foot on a Falcons punt. Matt Ryan threw an interception to Rasul Douglas and Foles had one four plays later as Dallas Goedert couldn’t hold on to the ball.

After two punts, Foles and the Birds went on one final drive for another Ajayi run and a two-point conversion. The defense bent but didn’t break in the end, with Ronald Darby covering Julio Jones on the final play to seal the 18-12 win.

Despite the offense coming in for the game-winning score late, the defense stole the show from the first Falcon drive to the last. Guys like Jordan Hicks, Sidney Jones, Kamu Grugier-Hill, the defensive line (except for Derek Barnett), and Darby played exceptionally well. There’s a ton to be pleased from that unit.

As for the offense, expect Foles to be under center for a few more weeks, according to Ian Rapoport. The Eagles also placed Mack Hollins on IR. Nelson Agholor was really the only player that showed up, recording a triple-double in passing, rushing, and receiving. Zach Ertz made some catches but also dropped some balls, and Goedert was mainly quiet. They need some work.

Despite them being small favorites and even underdogs later in the day, with mixed results in our picks, it still felt like the Eagles were underdogs. Kevin thinks fans should get away from that mentality. But maybe it works for the team.

They have a long break before Week 2 against Tampa Bay. They’ll also get Nigel Bradham and Deiondre’ Hall back today. Go Birds.
