Is there a way for a team to get an L despite not playing? I say yes.

That’s what happened last night. The Phillies-Nationals game was postponed due to pretty bad conditions with the infield dirt. So how did this happen when it wasn’t even raining?

The grounds crew said the field had a maintenance day for the tarp to not be on the field. But Philadelphia got more rain than expected this weekend, resulting in a very wet and muddy infield when the crew got to Citizens Bank Park Monday afternoon. Some players described it as “spongy” and compared it to “pudding.”

Another freak cancellation due to the playing surface. If you recall a couple years ago, the Sixers-Kings game back in 2016 was cancelled due to condensation on the court. Back in 2001 at the Vet, the Eagles-Ravens preseason game was called because of the turf. I can’t think of one that involves the Flyers with the playing surface, but the roof of the Spectrum was ripped apart in a storm during their first season in 1968.

Because of this, the Phils and Nats will try and play two today. Jake Arrieta will take the mound at 3:05 PM on NBC Sports Philadelphia in the first game. They’ll play Game 2 a half-hour later with Nick Pivetta pitching. It’s supposed to rain today.

The Roundup:

The Eagles worked out former Ravens first round pick Breshad Perriman and will work out former Browns and Bills wide receiver Corey Coleman. Braxton Miller is on the practice squad as well.

Despite not being active for the first game of the season, new safety Deiondre’ Hall is happy to taste success:

Hall said he is happy to be Wentz’s teammate after competing against him for Northern Iowa, when Wentz was at North Dakota State, and in Wentz’s second NFL game, a 29-14 Eagles win in 2016. Hall did not say whether Wentz gave him any information regarding the quarterback’s return from knee surgery.

“I haven’t stopped smiling since I’ve been here,” said Hall, who is 6-foot-2, 206. “A little bit different culture, but it’s a winning culture, and that’s really good for me. I think I have eight total wins [in 10 Bears games over two seasons], to come in and already have a win under my belt – even if I wasn’t a part of it, I was still on the team, so it counts.”

Hall said he watched the Eagles play Atlanta on TV from his room in the team hotel. After taking his physical, he wasn’t allowed in the facility until after the opener, when the substance-abuse suspension was over.

Flyers center Sean Couturier is progressing in his rehab, which is a good thing:

“Honestly I feel really good,” he said. “Like I said, we’re going to be cautious and not push it. Still probably going to be skating on my own for a week or two and go from there.”

Couturier originally injured the knee when he collided with teammate Radko Gudas during a practice while the Flyers were in the playoffs last season. His latest injury, to the same knee, was also a “freak thing,” he said.

“It’s a charity game, but it’s like a high-level tournament where basically all the guys from Quebec meet up and play games all weekend to see where we are at in our summer training…and push each other,” he said. “They raise money for charity doing that. It’s kind of part of the training, so yeah, you are cautious. But at the same time, I’m not just going to sit back on my couch all summer and show up to camp.”

The first preseason game is this Sunday against the Islanders. Did you even think about preseason hockey?
