The Eagles are 3-4 and just added another starter to injured reserve.

But it could be worse.

You could be the 1-6 Giants, led by 37 year old Eli Manning and Pat Shurmur, who is now 11-29 as a head coach. You could be a team with exciting skill players like Odell Beckham Jr. and Saquon Barkley who can’t do it all themselves, certainly not behind a fading quarterback and horrendous offensive line.

Giants’ brass appears to understand that, finally. They traded Eli Apple Tuesday for a 2019 4th round draft pick and 2020 7th rounder, according to Adam Schefter.

Then this tweet popped up:

Like clockwork, this crossed the wire on Wednesday morning:

La Canfora also says that teams are “sniffing around” on Janoris Jenkins and Gareon Conley, so the yard sale is on. Put the New York Giants next to the old Clive Cussler books and Fleetwood Mac vinyl. $1 apiece, ten for $5.

It certainly seems like Ben McAdoo was right to bench Eli Manning last year, or at least on the right path to understanding that this team wasn’t going to be a playoff contender moving forward. I know some Giants fans push back on the McAdoo thing because they say it was the way he treated the benching that rubbed them the wrong way, coupled with the general belief that Geno Smith was definitely not the guy to lead the Giants forward. I guess that’s fair to say, but honestly it was everybody in America sans NYG decision makers who realized that Eli was done after watching last season unfold.

Instead, they stubbornly stuck with an aging quarterback who can’t get the ball to the stud wideout that you just signed to a huge contract, then decided to draft a running back who will probably be beat up and worn out by the time they bring in a QB and offensive line that complements the talent at the skill positions. They had their pick of Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Josh Rosen, and Lamar Jackson, and decided not to go that route. They did grab Kyle Lauletta in the 4th round, so we’ll see if he gets a chance sometime this season.

Can the Eagles jump in on the fire sale? I don’t know, but Matt Lombardo, formerly of 97.5 the Fanatic, identified Landon Collins, Dalvin Tomlinson, and Olivier Vernon as other potential trade pieces. The Eagles could certainly use help in the secondary, so Collins and Jenkins are interesting names, but I don’t know if those guys put you over the top. This Eagles season is dangerously close to being lost due to injuries and other assorted bullshit, but the other side of the coin is that the Giants are directly contributing to the NFC East being terrible, which opens the door for another Philadelphia division title.
