The Flyers had their home opener last night against the San Jose Sharks. It went downhill after the opening face off.

The Sharks jumped out early, starting their scoring rampage 3:17 into the first period. 11 seconds later, they struck again. San Jose scored two more times en route to an 8-2 trouncing of the Flyers.

It was a very poor effort overall. Brian Elliott gave up all eight goals, but many of them weren’t his fault. He stopped 40 of 48 shots, which isn’t ideal. There were plenty of defensive mistakes that the Sharks were able to take advantage of during the 60 minutes. Shayne Gostisbehere and Wayne Simmonds were the goal scorers for Philadelphia.

The team has to forget about this debacle and move on quickly. That’s because they travel to Ottawa and face off against the Senators tonight at 7:30 PM on NBC Sports Philadelphia. Calvin Pickard, who the Flyers picked up via waivers prior to the start of the season, will make his debut with the team starting in goal.

But the only good thing about last night’s home opener: Gritty. He descended from the Wells Fargo Center ceiling to make his grand entrance. Yet his greatness did nothing on the ice, which matters the most.

The Roundup:

We’re a day away from the Eagles taking on the Giants in the Meadowlands Thursday night. There’s still plenty of guys that are banged up and might not play.

But it looks like Derek Barnett and Corey Clement will play.

The most discussed hole the Eagles might have is at running back. The Birds reportedly are looking at bringing back LeSean McCoy from the Bills. Kyle doesn’t like that one bit. But could Anthony Gargano (!!) be getting trade rumors from Bills head coach Sean McDermott?

The coordinators spoke yesterday and discussed the defensive struggles (again), as well as Michael Bennett’s roughing the passer penalty and Isaac Seumalo.

Does Jalen Mills really suck?

Finally, Garry Cobb thinks the Eagles should…stop having sex. Good one G.

The Sixers are working on how to deal without having Wilson Chandler for a short time.

Chandler comes in with big expectations by his teammates and coaches. However, the small forward has been sidelined since straining his left hamstring in the Sept. 28 preseason opener against Melbourne United.  The Sixers are also tinkering with a starting backcourt of Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz.

“It’s going  to take a third of a year,” Brown said of getting things figured out. “A lot of new faces, and soon Wilson is going come back into it.”

The coach breaks his seasons into thirds. His first third is from the start of the season until Christmas. The second third is from Christmas to the NBA All-Star break. The final third is from the All-Star break until the end of the regular season.

“We’ll try to get us organized as best as we can try and find a rhythm,” Brown said. “I think that this first third, that is the challenge, Then you start consolidating and you try to walk a season down.

“But it is going to take that type of time and patience, I believe.”
