Jimmy Butler looked good. But giving up a 21-0 run spoiled things in the end.

The Sixers led by as much as 16 points in the final frame, but the Magic went on a huge run in that quarter to change the momentum. Then with the game tied late, Terrence Ross hit a big 3-pointer for the eventual game-winner to give the Magic a 111-106 win.

Butler looked good in his first run with his new squad, scoring 14 points along with two assists and four rebounds. He started as the small forward in the game with JJ Redick back in the starting lineup as the shooting guard and Wilson Chandler as the power forward. Joel Embiid recorded his first career triple-double with 19 points, 10 assists, and 13 rebounds.

That meant Markelle Fultz was relegated to the bench. But in his first game in his new role, he performed very well with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting. Furkan Korkmaz also got some more minutes and showed some bright spots with eight points of his own and making both 3-point tries.

Butler also had some good things to say about Brett Brown:

Up next is yet another back-to-back. First, the Sixers will host the Utah Jazz in Butler’s home debut Friday night. They’ll roll down to Charlotte on Saturday.

The Roundup:

In a national championship rematch, Villanova got SMOKED by Michigan 73-46. It wasn’t a pretty sight to see. Eric Paschall was the only Wildcat who scored in double figures, with 10 points. Nova shot 31.8% on the night and went 6-25 (24%) in the first half. They’ll try to regroup on Saturday against Furman.

Elsewhere, La Salle fell to Florida 82-69. Pookie Powell scored 21 points in the losing effort. Drexel crushed Division III Bryn Athyn 118-41 for their first win of the year. The two Philly teams will play each other on Saturday.

To the Eagles, who continue to get ready for the Saints on Sunday. First, the injury report:

Doug Pederson spoke to the media yesterday and was optimistic about Sidney Jones playing. Tim Jernigan is also day-to-day. This comes a day after the coordinators spoke.

Center Jason Kelce believes the root of the team’s problems this year is the lack of accountability:

“Last year, it just seemed like everybody was clicking. We had guys like Brent Celek who had been here a long time who was very accountable, Torrey Smith who had been in the league for a long time, very accountable. Mack Hollins was a guy that gave great effort. LeGarrette Blount and all of these running backs that, they had their limited amount of stuff that they had to know, but they knew what to do, and they knew how to do those things. That’s what we’re missing. We’re missing that accountability.”

Several of the players that Kelce mentioned like Celek, Smith and Blount were valuable figures in the locker room during the Eagles’ title run. Celek was released and ultimately retired, Blount left in free agency for the Detroit Lions, and Smith was traded to the Carolina Panthers for cornerback Daryl Worley.

Kelce stressed that he isn’t suggesting current players on the team are “bad guys” or giving poor effort, but that a mix of departures and injuries have depleted them in areas both tangible and intangible.

“This isn’t just players, this is coaches, this is everybody. Everybody takes accountability in making sure that everybody is ready to go. From a players’ standpoint, it’s on you to make sure that you’re watching the film, you’re doing everything during the week necessary for you to improve, to make sure that you understand the finer coaching points, every little detail, so that when you’re in the middle of the game, you’re not playing slow or apprehensive, you know exactly what you have to do and you can go 100 percent and give great effort. And it’s also on the coaches to make sure everybody’s ready to go,” Kelce said.

“[Last year] there was a much greater level of accountability from a cohesive standpoint of everybody working together, and part of that is just on the makeup of the team and guys having done this for a long time and knowing the ins and outs of the game.”
