It’s the end of an era in the Philadelphia college hoops scene.

St. Joe’s decided to dump Phil Martelli after 24 years on Hawk Hill as part of a “leadership change” spearheaded by new AD Jill Bodensteiner. The Hawks finished 14-19 and haven’t had a season above .500 since 2015-16 when they lost to Oregon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

A tough decision, but there were some people that wanted the 64-year-old out despite what he’s done at the school. It’s been 15 years since the Hawks went to the Elite 8 and were a basket short of a Final Four appearance. Jameer Nelson and Delonte West aren’t walking through that door anymore. At least to play.

Later in the day, Fran Dunphy coached his final game with the Owls as Temple fell to Belmont 81-70 in the First Four. The Owls held a five point lead midway through the second half, but the Bruins came back with a 9-0 run right after. They also shot 53% compared to Temple’s 39%.

The 70-year-old finishes his career with 580 wins in 30 years at Penn and Temple. But his NCAA Tournament record is disappointing at 3-14 mark. It shouldn’t be surprising since he was at Penn for a good chunk of his career, but he went just 2-8 in the Tournament with the Owls. The only wins came against Penn State (2011) and NC State (2013). That’s not good.

Unlike St. Joe’s, Temple has a successor in ex-Sixer Aaron McKie, a product of previous head coach John Chaney. We’ll see what St. Joe’s does with their new leader. Could it be a very inexperienced Jameer Nelson?

The Sixers continued their winning ways with a 118-114 victory over Charlotte. Without Joel Embiid, it was JJ Redick who stole the show with a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds to go with eight assists. Tobias Harris also recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Ben Simmons put up 28 points and Jimmy Butler scored 23.

The bench sucked last night outside of James Ennis. He scored all 14 bench points including a big 3 with 18.6 seconds left. Let’s hope the bench bounces back tonight.

Speaking of tonight, the Sixers host Boston at 7 PM on NBC Sports Philadelphia and ESPN. “Lame” Joel Embiid should play tonight.

On the ice, the Flyers fell to Montreal 3-1. Sean Couturier scored the lone Philadelphia goal, while Carter Hart stopped 33 of 35 shots. There’s no chance the Flyers make a playoff run:

Flyers play the Blackhawks in Chicago tomorrow night. Those two teams will start next season in Prague.

We were all dreaming about Mike Trout to the Phillies in two years. That probably won’t happen now as the outfielder is signing a massive 12-year, $430 million contract with the Angels. I hope he enjoys the money while not making the playoffs. Screw the Angels.

Meanwhile, expect Roman Quinn and Tommy Hunter to start the season on the injured (not disabled) list.
