Where is the money going?

The Texas-Tech Michigan State line has already moved since in favor of Texas Tech.

% of Handle
Money Line Spread
Michigan St. 58% 59%
Texas Tech 42% 41%

That’s interesting, too, because DraftKings has told us that the money is on Michigan State. 58% of the moneyline and 59% of the spread money is on the Spartans… and yet, the line has moved in favor of Texas Tech. Anecdotally, we’ve heard from PointsBet that they are taking big money on the Red Raiders and that they make up the bulk of their exposure for the Final Four.

% of Handle
Money Line Spread
Auburn 64% 81%
Virginia 36% 19%

Meanwhile, bettors hate Virginia. We’ve heard they are getting little of the action elsewhere, and it may be even more exaggerated at DraftKings, where Auburn is getting 64% of the moneyline action and a whopping 81% of the spread bets.

Virginia is certainly impacted by their loss to a 16 seed last year, but even more important might be their low-scoring style of play, which the public generally hates.

Championship futures

  • Virginia: +140
  • Michigan State: +195
  • Texas Tech: +400
  • Auburn: +700

Texas Tech and Auburn seem like the better play, with longer odds, but especially so when you consider where they started the year:

National Championship Odds
11/6/18 3/18/19 4/3/19
Virginia +1600 +725 +140
Michigan State +2500 +1700 +195
Texas Tech +5000 +3300 +400
Auburn +4100 +4500 +700

Even two weeks ago they were 33-1 and 45-1, respectively. Texas Tech has also been perfect against the spread in the tournament.

Potential National Championship odds

DraftKings bookmaker Johnny Avello puts forth his preliminary National Championship game odds:

  • Virginia -1 vs. Michigan State
  • Virginia -3.5 vs. Texas Tech
  • Michigan St. -4.5 vs. Auburn
  • Texas Tech -2 vs. Auburn

Most outstanding player

DraftKings announced they are taking bets on Final Four most outstanding player:

  • Cassius Winton: +300
  • Ty Jerome: +400
  • Kyle Guy: +550
  • De’Andre Hunter: +600
  • Jarrett Culver: +650
  • Bryce Brown: +1400

Props and parlays

Here’s a parlay I really like– Auburn and the under at +550. The money hates Virginia and so do I. Their low-scoring style seems destined to produce an under result in a cavernous arena, which tends to yield wacky results. With Auburn’s long odds and Virginia’s strong defense, this is a high value play.

There are a range of player props, but one game-based prop to look for is an odds boost on any Final Four game going to overtime. DraftKings is offering that at +360, up from +300, a 20% boost.

They are also boosting the odds on Jarrett Culver over 20.5 points and a Texas Tech win vs. Michigan State from +280 to +335, a boost of nearly 20%.
