The Phillies have promoted 22-year-old relief pitcher Edgar Garcia to the Major League 25-man roster.

Enyel De Los Santos, who pitched two scoreless innings yesterday’s in 7-1 win over the Nationals, was optioned back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley where he will get more regular work. Garcia’s addition will give the team a fresh arm ahead of its three-game set with St Louis.

De Los Santos appeared in only two games with the Phillies since arriving at the end of last month. He was hit around in his first outing back on April 27 against Miami, yielding two hits and two earned runs in a one inning appearance, but was sharp yesterday. It won’t be the last we see of him at the Major League level this season.

As for Garcia’s promotion, baseball writer Antonio Puesan first broke the news on Twitter last night:

Yes, exactly. What he said.

Garcia was 1-1 with a 1.65 ERA in 13 appearances with the Iron Pigs this season and is the Phillies’ 28th ranked prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.  Here is the Pipeline assessment:

Garcia’s fastball-slider combination works extremely well in shorter stinks out of the bullpen. With a live arm and athletic delivery, Garcia will throw his fastball in the 92-95 mph range and touches a tick higher regularly. He routinely misses bats with his slider, which flashes plus. His changeup was a work in progress, but as a short reliever, it’s possible he can just be a two-pitch pitcher, though that would limit his value.

That pretty much meshes with most other reports on Garcia. His fastball sets up a plus-slider.

Ad it turns out, former Phillies reliever and current MLB Network analyst Dan Plesac was all over this back in February:

With Victor Arano, Tommy Hunter, and David Robertson still not expected back anytime soon, Garcia could have a chance to stick around if he gets off to a good start. We’ll see.

In 16.1 innings of work this season at Lehigh Valley, Garcia struck out 23 hitters, walking only six, with an impressive 0.73 WHIP. Only one of the six hits he allowed was a home run.

Last season, Garcia had a 3.32 ERA with a 1.18 WHIP in 52 games between Lehigh Valley and Double-A Reading.
