On a somber day for the Phillies with the passing of chairman David Montgomery, Wednesday ended with some fireworks on the mound.

Jerad Eickhoff pitched eight shutout innings and gave up three hits with three walks and four strikeouts while Cesar Hernandez brought in three RBIs on a 3-for-5 day as the Phils shutout the Cardinals 5-0.

It was the second time Eickhoff pitched shutout baseball in his three starts this year. No Cardinal runner safely reached second until a Yadier Molina double in the eighth. Despite his low velocity (91 on his fastball), the right-hander delivered a variety of different pitches throughout.

The return of Eickhoff has been excellent in a season that hasn’t seen the best of Aaron Nola and Vince Velasquez. If Eickhoff can keep his tremendous start going and improve on his velocity, he could be a very solid starter and bolster the rotation.

The Phils are off today, so that means you can listen to the latest edition of Crossed Up before their weekend series against the Royals in Kansas City.
