This time around, a messy third inning cost the Phillies big time in a 5-2 loss to the Brewers.

It began with Jake Arrieta walking Gio Gonzalez and Lorenzo Cain in the first two at-bats. That created a jam.

Christian Yelich hit a grounder deep in the infield to Cesar Hernandez who was playing in the first and second base hole. He looked to potentially have a play at second, but chose not to throw it there. Rhys Hoskins tried to make the play as well, leaving the base entirely open. Yelich beat the throw and the bases were loaded.

Ryan Braun hit a grounder to third baseman Sean Rodriguez. Could have been a double or a triple play. But Rodriguez got confused, didn’t tag third and tried to tag Cain. Gonzalez started to run to home where Rodriguez finally made the throw to J.T. Realmuto for the force out. Only one.

After a Mike Moustakas walk that brought Cain home, Jesus Aguilar singled to bring in Yelich and Braun. Instead of three outs and no runs, the inning became three outs and three runs. Unreal.

Arrieta finished the night going six innings and giving up all five runs on five hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Another okay or bad outing. At least he was better at pitching than Bruce Willis.

The two teams conclude their four-game series this afternoon at 1:05 PM on NBC Sports Philadelphia. Zach Eflin is on the mound.

Also, Scott Kingery is getting closer to returning.

The Jets fired their general manager in what was a very Jetsy thing to do. Vice President of Player Personnel Joe Douglas could be a potential candidate for the job, per Adam Schefter.

Also from Schefter, he thinks the Eagles and Carson Wentz will agree to a contract extension before this season begins:

“My belief is that deal will get done at some point this offseason, before the season begins. They’ll get a deal in place. I think, from everything I’ve gathered, I think the two sides have begun talking. I think that both sides are motivated to get it done. I don’t think they’re close, right now, to getting it done, but when I talk to people around the league who look at that deal, they believe it’s going to get done.

“Now, I think the Eagles, privately, are confident it will get done. They know they’re still working here, and there’s progress to make, but the fact that the two sides have begun their discussions and are talking — we’ll see how this shakes out, but my sense is the Eagles think it’ll get done, and it’s a matter of when they can finish it off and get it together. I think the signs point to that deal getting done this offseason, at some point in time, and they’ll lock up Wentz.

“I don’t know how it’ll shake out in terms of numbers, but the important thing is, for Carson Wentz, he’ll get some guaranteed money with his injury history, and then I think he’ll get another chance at a bite of the apple once this deal that he eventually signs expires.”
