In a move that will come as a surprise to some, the Flyers opted to re-sign goaltender Brian Elliott, not Cam Talbot, to a 1-year/$2 million deal.

If you’ve followed the team over the past few years, you’ll know that the Flyers have had unprecedented issues with goaltender health, including last season’s fiasco in which they played an NHL-record EIGHT different goalies. Elliott played in 26 games, including 23 starts, for the Flyers in 2018-19, with a 2.96 GAA and a .907 save percentage. Overall, he’s played in 69 games, including 65 starts, for the Orange & Black, with a 2.77 GAA and .908 save percentage. The question moving forward is whether or not he’ll be able to stay healthy as the backup to Carter Hart.

More on what this move means after the jump:

The shock in all of this, if you want to call it that, is that this signals the end of Cam Talbot’s time in Philly. Talbot was brought in last season to be a mentor of sorts for franchise netminder Carter Hart, as the two work out together in the offseason. Talbot’s numbers won’t jump off the page for a good reason. In four games last season for the Flyers, he was rocked to the tune of a 3.70 GAA and .881 save percentage.

This also almost certainly ends Michal Neuvirth’s four-season run with the team.
