Anybody still watching the Phillies?

They’re 75-70, still two games out of the final Wild Card spot and facing a schedule that includes a three game series in Atlanta and four five game series in Washington.

Gabe Kapler’s team lost 3-1 last night at home as Dallas Keuchel went six innings, allowing one earned run with eight strikeouts and three walks. Keuchel was a free agent to begin the season and somebody the Phils could have gone out and snagged, but they didn’t, and he instead signed a one year deal with the Braves worth $13 million.

After the game, Keuchel was asked about free agency and the Phillies’ non-approach, saying the following:

Keuchel:

“I mean if you don’t come calling, what is there for me to be mad about? I think a lot of those guys over there in the front office are second guessing themselves, and I would too.”

Is he wrong? The Phils front office decided to go for affordable rentals this season instead of giving up assets to acquire better players. Ironically, of course, Keuchel didn’t exactly break Atlanta’s bank. He’s 8-5 this year with a 3.35 ERA and 1.30 WHIP.

Bryce Harper was also asked about Keuchel, saying this via Matt Breen at the Inquirer:

“He’s a Cy Young for a reason,” Bryce Harper said. “If you have an opportunity to go out and get a guy like that, I think all 29 teams should have that. But that’s how the game is right now and that’s how it goes. I thought Keuchel came out tonight and threw the ball really well.”

Welp. On to the next one.
